This blog will be directed at the 20% of you who may actually read it instead of scrolling down to immediately locate the red X button and give it your negative points. I will try to explain why anyone who calls Gries’ fans racists is wrong, as well as a case for why she should certainly be brought back for an all-star season. If you disagree with me that’s your business and I’m sure many of you will right off the bat and not care about what I have to say, but the rest of you maybe will understand why I love Aaryn so much as one of the best TV villains of all-time.
I’d like to start off by addressing the real reason that I loved Aaryn so much on her season. If you were to look at my weekly rankings of my Big Brother favorites this year, you’d notice that by the time Devin was evicted he was #2 on my favorites list. The only entertaining part about Big Brother is picking the most controversial and entertaining player to root for. Devin would have been hysterical if the entire viewing audience hated him after he kept getting power week after week. The one thing that Devin didn’t have that Aaryn did was any social awareness whatsoever. Aaryn had no regard for the public’s opinion of her, but she was able to maneuver her way out of being a target on several occasions.
The reason that I love Aaryn is because in addition to her being hated by all of America, she was like a cockroach that wouldn’t go away. She won FOUR Head of Households, which in itself would be impressive and if she hadn’t been racist she would have been hailed as a “comp queen” by 95% of the website. She still is by some, but her comments got in the way of a massive popularity surge she could have had. I enjoy rooting for the people that everyone hates, or the most comical character in the house. It wasn’t about the comments which I will now address in the following paragraphs.
If your argument is that because I support Aaryn Gries then I must also endorse the things she said in the house and agree with them myself (and am a complete and utter “racist”) then you’re wrong. By the same token two things would then have to be true. One, since Victoria is my favorite this season, I must share the same anti-Muslim beliefs she does, I must think she’s the prettiest girl in the house (Nicole is), and I must also think that having no allies whatsoever is a good way of playing Big Brother. I don’t, nor did I agree with the horrible comments Aaryn made. Just because they were awful doesn’t make the hate for her hilarious, as if somehow Aaryn had murdered your entire family or something. Second point here is that Aaryn said some incredibly homophobic things including in reference to Andy “no one is going to get rid of whoever that queer puts up”. She also told a story about how she outed one of her close gay friends to her friends and then they beat him up. If I’m a racist because I support her, clearly I must be a huge homophobe too since she also directed a slew of hateful comments at gays.
You can argue that Aaryn was a terrible human being on Big Brother 15 and that she was and still is a huge racist. I don’t know if I believe that is the case. I think Aaryn was very naïve and very ignorant when she went on the show. I don’t think she realized that what she said could have a real world reaction on her. My guess is that she really has talked like that with her friends back in Texas. But how many of us haven’t said something hateful before on a regular basis? I know I’ve heard equally as bad comments from at LEAST 50% of Tengaged about other users. When @andychuck08 ridiculed skyy it was hilarious. If Aaryn had done something like that, the same people like Yaxha and Brandonator would hate her for hating the handicapped. I do believe that Aaryn is a prime contestant to be brought back for a second chances season not so much for her gameplay or winning the season, but a shot to redeem herself in the eyes of the public. I’m sure there are a ton of you who would never give her a second chance or believe she’s changed no matter how differently she acted on a new season, but I think maybe a few peoples’ minds would be changed.
Also, people say that she won’t ever be given the opportunity to return but I disagree. I think CBS has a gold mine on their hands with her. First of all she was incredibly hated by all of America and people tuned in every week just to see if she’d finally be evicted. Her interview with Julie was one of the most controversial Big Brother moments of all time. If they brought her back, people WOULD watch just to see if she’s changed or if she’s there to cause more controversy again. She wasn’t TOO bad of a strategist, she just let Amanda and McCrae control her a lot until it was too late. Yall love Amber and she’s one of the worst in the history of the game. CBS could give her a “changed woman” storyline and potentially restore her image if she made a conscious effort to change her ways.
It’s not fair to hate someone because of the contestants they support. Janelle makes hateful comments towards other people all the time on Twitter yet she’s regarded as some Big Brother goddess which baffles me. She attacked Christine on her appearance (which after reading what Christine has said might be deserved), but Janelle is one of the most superficial people to ever play the game. She’s consistently mean spirited but yet she’s some hero to the fans which I will never understand. I suppose after writing this entire thing I owe Timster an apology for consistently calling him out for his love of black contestants. If that’s what you want to root for and that’s the reason you want to root for them then who cares. The only thing that annoyed me was that he pretends that’s not the reason he roots for them. I rooted for Aaryn because she’s great TV. She’s a good character, and you can’t say she wouldn’t make good TV if she returned.
I'll copy and paste your comments for you when you neg so that you won't be inconvenienced.
"You're still a racist and Aaryn is still a racist, no, - [insert number here]"
LOL IS THIS SERIOUS? I actually didn't automatically neg and I read most of it but yay thanks for the apology! I've blogged a few days ago that it is pretty dumb to hate people for who they root for and I just need to accept everyone connects to contestants for certain reasons.
lol Jgoodies and I used to fight all the time strictly cause he was an Aaryn fan. I got over it and idc anymore.
You like who you like and I like who I like. There's no argument about it.
wmkqi65 I don't believe they were misconstrued at all, she just repeated what Aaryn said. Aaryn was ambushed, but I suppose she should have been. It was just unfortunate none of the other houseguests who said horrible things were not asked about them in the same manner.
Yaxha Please explain to me what I have done that is racist. Please. It makes ZERO sense. I don't think you understand the definition of the word.
I love her, but I know for a fact she won't return due to the stigma attached to her, and there would be like a public outrage on CBS for casting her again. It sucks, really.
agreed, she said some bad things but they were jokes, im sure a lot of people joke with their friends and throw the f bomb or whatever or make racist jokes, meant to be funny, not hateful. its not like she was preaching every single day how she hated a certain race or gays, it was like a couple comments.
and agreed with tengagers saying worst and getting away with it too.
aquamarine i don't think you're a racist but i don't genuinely like aaryn and i don't feel as if i can say that i condone what she said in any way and i don't feel as if anyone should defend her
yes you can like her although i will disagree
yes you have a good point in that she is the most controversial character
however i beg to differ and i feel as if we can agree to disagree
I wasn't an Aaryn but if you say you're a racist for liking her with any ounce of seriousness you clearly have more pressing social and logical issues to address than fighting over who you should like on reality TV.
