-  Persona 4 Golden

Ah, another game of the Persona series that I tried out this year, and definitely my most favorite persona game I've played thus far in terms of storyline.   I just think the story was done to perfection in this game when comparing it to the storylines of persona 3 portable and persona 5 royal, although both those had amazing stories as well, I just preferred the persona 4 storyline.  Just having the story focus be on trying to find the main villain behind people dying/going missing through a mysterious TV channel, and going inside the TV for the combat sections/heavy gameplay sections, with goal of rescuing people from dying inside this TV program.  I just absolutely loved how it was dealt with

As well, I loved all the party members in this game, as well as just all the main characters in general.   However, I will say in terms of confidants, prefer the ones in persona 3/persona 5.   Then the gameplay/combat was done nicely, although not too much different than other persona games, still loved it.  Also, this was the game that gave me one of my most favorite video game OST songs in specialist

Overall, this was in my #1 spot on my list basically most of the year, as soon as I finished the game, it was automatically #1 for me and there was just nothing else that was able to top it, even though Neon White came close to doing so.   Heavily recommend giving persona 4 golden a shot if persona series is your thing.   With that though, my 2023 game ranking is officially over, and will see you next year when I'm ready to rank 2024 games.

-  Neon White

Neon White was definitely my first experience with a more speed run style of game/platformer, and I absolutely loved it.   Honestly, from all the games I played this year, Neon White has by my far my most favorite gameplay elements, where goal is to try to get fast times basically, a speed running dream.   Also uses cards/enemies to their potential to help try getting the levels done faster, and has good replayability trying to find the quicker routes on each level.

This would have very well been my number one game of the year in terms of what I played, but I must say the story portion of the game heavily weighed it down.   Main focus being on just trying to pass other neons on the ranks to reach the top, but it was just boring to read through, do love some of the other neons though like neon red.

Overall, I would still recommend trying this game out, because even with the poor story, it was still a very, very fun game and I'd gladly play it again.

Ranks:
2nd: Neon White
3rd: AI The Somnium Files: Nirvana Iniative
4th: Master Detective Archives: Rain Code

-  AI The Somnium Files: Nirvana Initiative

First off, since I missed doing post yesterday due to being busy, going to be doing 3 and 2 rank blogs both today, so my #2 post will be up later afternoon.

Ah, yet another detective/story style game that I absolutely loved.   I played the original Somnium Files last year and loved it, so when I heard there was another game to the series, I knew instantly I wanted to play it as well, and glad I did.

First off, the story was pretty nice, had a good continuation to the story of the first somnium game, while also adding some new elements.   Then the characters were all pretty nice, even one I hated in first somnium was a little more tolerable in nirvana initiative (although still was my least favorite, won't lie.)   While of course also having some new characters added to the mix.

Now, we go into the gameplay, I loved the different twist and turns each somnium took in nirvana iniative, much prefer these over the somniums in the first game, whether it be a game show somnium, or a pokemon based somnium, each theme made the somnium feel that much more unique.  As well, the gameplay starts right off the bat, there's no waiting around, as soon as you load up the game, excitement starts up.

Overall, I absolutely loved this game, and would definitely recommend giving it a shot, alongside the regular somnium files

Ranks:
3rd: AI The Somnium Files: Nirvana Iniative
4th: Master Detective Archives: Rain Code
5th: Super Mario Wonder
6th: Kingdom Hearts
7th: Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

13th: Process of Elimination
14th: Pokemon Too Many Types
15th: Pac-Man World Re-Pac

17th: Survivor Castaway Island

-  Master Detective Archives: Rain Code

Honestly, when I first saw this game announced in a nintendo direct earlier this year, I knew straight away that I wanted to get it to try it out, because I love detective story based games, as well as the company behind making most of them.   Then let's just say, really glad I did pick up this game, because I was heavily addicted to it and could barely put it down, like there was a good bit that I heavily considered this game being better than the Danganronpa series, which after some thought Danganronpa still the better detective game.

The story of this game was pretty nice, where you play as Yuma and work alongside the death god Shinigami, who is also my favorite character of the game, and try to solve the cases of each chapter.   Have a few twist and turns that keep you on your toes, as well as requests on the side to give more depth of focus.   Won't say too much else, because like any detective game, it's a story you have to see/witness for yourself, and basically the storyline is the major selling point of detective games like this.

When it comes to the gameplay behind solving cases, it's bit generic in terms of finding evidence, but I found the Shinigami temples pretty fun to trek through, as ya never know what'd occur there, and each chapter had a more unique temple to fit with the theme of said chapter.

Finally, we have the characters, who are all pretty awesome, even if not the most memorable outside of like Shinigami, but I genuinely don't think there was any character I hated or disliked heavily.

Overall, I absolutely loved this game and would definitely recommend giving it a try if you're into story based detective games/danganronpa style games

Ranks:
4th: Master Detective Archives: Rain Code

-  Super Mario Wonder

Ah, finally got another 2D style Mario and I absolutely loved it.   All the level designs were exceptional, even if some of the portions made it feel like you were on something or that you were having a fever dream.   Whether it be singing piranha plants, pipes that move like worms, each wonder flower made some levels feel interesting.  As well, some of the difficulty of the levels made for a more fun, yet challenging experience, alongside the multiplayer aspect.   The one level where you have time your jumps with the rhythm of the beat took me a long while, as well as the final level where you use all the badges you earned throughout game.

Only thing I didn't care for as much in Wonder were the boss fights, just felt they could have been done better, but I didn't really care as much about that honestly.

Overall, I absolutely loved Mario Wonder and would heavily recommend giving it a shot if you love Mario or platformers, also give the piranha plant song a listen because it's kind of a bop

Ranks:
5th: Super Mario Wonder

2023 Game Rankings #6 Dec 17, 2023

-  Kingdom Hearts

Now, this was the game I originally had as my #7, but felt it deserved the higher spot over Tears of the Kingdom.   As well, I technically started this game in December of last year, but finished it this year, so felt still was fair to include it on this list.

Anyways, this was my first experience of the Kingdom Hearts series, and I must say, I absolutely loved it, between the characters, the storyline and the boss fights, was purely glorious.   At the start, had option to pick between wand for boosting magic, sword to boost physical attacking, or shield to boost defenses.   Which, I chose the sword, because I'm more of a head to head combat playstyle than magic or defensive (changed it up in Kingdom Hearts 2.5 though, which that game isn't on this list, but should be on my 2024 rankings.)

Then just each world you go across, and seeing all the different disney universes coming together in the game was amazing.  Whether it be Aladdin or Hercules, or something else entirely, I absolutely loved it.   As well, the asteroid minigame in the gummi ship you do between each world was also pretty nice.

Overall, I would definitely recommend giving this game a shot, just be ready to put aside a lot of time to get through it, as it's a fairly lengthy game.

Ranks:
6th: Kingdom Hearts
7th: Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
8th: Persona 3 Portable
9th: Ori and the Will of the Wisps
10th: Pokemon Emerald Rogue
