Reviewing Gen. 7 Pokemon (Comfey - Golisopod)

Apr 13, 2017 by Icarus_Mark
Welcome back to me reviewing all the Generation 7 Pokemon everybody!  Yesterday we went over 5 Pokemon.  One of them was Tsareena, a Pokemon that really stood out to be a favorite amongst the new Pokemon coming into the Pokedex.  Today, we will go through 5 more Pokemon, and just like yesterday, the last one we’ll have will be quite a task to talk about.  So without further ado, let’s get on with it.

Comfey – Starting things off today is none other than this flowery circle.  To be honest, why it didn’t have the Grass-type and was stuck with pure Fairy is beyond me.  Everything about tis design screams that it should be a Grass-type, and honestly, I think this should have been the Grass/Fairy of Gen. 7 rather than the Morelull line.  Now, this is a Pokemon I don’t really have much memory of nor do I really care about.  Its best stats are defensive, and I am NOT a defensive player in Pokemon by any stretch of the means, so I’m pretty indifferent towards the Pokemon.  I don’t know whether to put it in Dislike or Fair because of how little I care for it, so you know what?  I’ll put it in both.

Oranguru – Now I use the term “orangutan” a lot when describing people I think can such assholes among other things, but the fact Pokemon has an ACTUAL orangutan here is pretty cool in that sense as a bit of irony.  IT has the Girafarig typing going for it, which is actually kind of nice because the Normal type gives it an Immunity it would otherwise have been weak to.  It’s a Moon exclusive, so I did not get to catch one of these.  Looking at how its stats are distributed though, it’s kind of disappointing, but what else can you expect from the orangutans of Game Freak?  Also, it looks more like 2016 King Louie than it actually does an orangutan, but the fact it is based on an orangutan automatically makes it more memorable to me.

Passimian – Here’s the Sun exclusive monkey from Lush Jungle, but now I have another problem I cannot bypass.  You can only find these in Lush Jungle, AND you only have a 5% encounter rate for these monkeys, so just because I had the version this Pokemon was an exclusive for does not by any stretch of the means mean that this will be the more memorable Pokemon.  In fact, I have a harder time remembering Passimian than I do Oranguru.  That being said, it can be a very viable Pokemon if you do manage to encounter and catch it.  It has a good base Attack stat of 120, HP is a decent 100, and Speed and Defense are doable as well with 80 and 90 respectively.  Its movepool ain’t bad either.  Sure, its Grass and Ghost moves can only be Special, and that means it most likely won’t do much, but it has several other types it can work with.  It also has a cool design if I do say so myself.  So it’s only right I put this in Fair simply because its rarity makes it not very memorable.

Wimpod – Here is the Bug/Water Pokemon that runs away like a little girl!  Now this Pokemon can be annoying if you let it be, but I just let it coast around until it evolved into Golisopod, which you can absolutely do with the Experience Share being a Key Item instead of a held one.  There is one major annoyance I do have with Wimpod that can make it kind of a chore, and no, I don’t mean the fact that it runs back into its cave if you approach it because you can just call upon Tauros to trigger a battle with it and capture it.  What I MEAN is that it doesn’t learn any moves by leveling up.  You have to give it TM’s if you want to teach it new moves in this form, and Struggle Bug might be fine in the beginning, but it’s not going to help you in the long run.  So consider this a softcore Magikarp.  But the fact that that’s what it is makes it a more memorable Pokemon in my opinion, and it’s not even its final form, so that softens the blow even more.  So for me personally, hating on this Pokemon would just be unfair.

Golisopod – And here we have what is basically adult Wimpod.  The reason I say this is because its Ability “Emergency Exit” is really no different from Wimpod’s “Wimp Out”, and the reason I did not discuss this Ability about Wimpod is because I want to go over this Ability in one lump category, which can be done better on Golisopod.  It’s good if you want to switch into something else, but if you are trying to do a Bravery Run, a challenge run where the main rule is that you absolutely cannot run from wild battles, this Ability makes it very annoying.  But there are things about Golisopod I can’t ignore for better or worse.  It will learn First Impression upon evolution, which can be a great opening move, but if you want to use it long term, then you’re SOL because it only works on the first turn.  Also, it lowkey has a reverse Feraligatr complex because although it does indeed learn Water moves, your options of good STAB moves for the Water-type at the least are limited.  This is because since the level it would have learned Razor Shell was before Wimpod could evolve, the only viable Water move it can learn by leveling up after evolution is Liquidation, which it learns at Level 48.  Also, while its Attack base is 125, its base Special Attack is only 60, so if you want to teach it a viable Water-type moves by other means, your only good choice is Waterfall since Surf is a Special Attack.  All of this made Golisopod a pain to train, as much as I wanted to have on my team.  That being said, it gives a chance for Golisopod to utilize type coverage as there are good moves in the Posion, Dark, Bug, and even Fighting types it can learn.  I personally taught it Brick Break to give it some extra type coverage.  Also, this is Guzma’s signature Pokemon, so right off the bat Golisopod isn’t going to be forgotten quite so easily as other Pokemon out there.  I do also like that its Pokedex entry in Moon calls it a peaceful Pokemon, a nice break from all those dark entries horror fanboys always try to look for (and we’ll be discussing some of those soon given what’s coming next).

Honestly, I did not think I would be spending this much time talking about Golisopod, and maybe I could have given Golisopod its own blog, but it’s not Oricorio.  It doesn’t have extra forms, nor is it a stand-alone Pokemon.  It is evolved from Wimpod, and so Golisopod needed to share the spotlight in a blog with only 4 different Pokemon.  It’s an interesting Pokemon though, and so one I find I spend a whole lot of time talking about.

Now, how I plan to break the next blogs will be as follows: In the next blog, we will cover all the way up to Silvally because a lot of what we’re about to come across for the next blog are going to have interesting stuff to talk about.  The one after will go to Bruxish and then the one after that will cover the last Pokemon to talk about before we get to the Tapus, which will have their own section, and then after the Tapus, it’s all about Cosmog’s line.  How I am going to divide the Ultra Beasts I don’t quite know just yet, but I’ll get there.  Anywho, that’s it for today.  I may have only talked about 5 Pokemon today, but hopefully I gave you all a lot to take in, especially with the Golisopod segment.  Peace!

Yeah, I can respect that SurvivorFreak13.  For me personally, it just came off as a bit lacking STAB-wise.  I actually came close to putting it on Like.
