Reviewing Gen. 7 Pokemon (Sandygast - Silvally)

Apr 14, 2017 by Icarus_Mark
Welcome back to me reviewing every Generation 7 Pokemon!  So yesterday had a rather interesting Pokemon to end with, but no Pokemon really stood out as one I loved.  Thankfully, despite there being several disappointing Pokemon, there has so far only been 1 in the entire generation that stood as a Pokemon I wish didn’t exist.  That’s a good sign for Generation 7 because in the first 5 generations, there were quite a few Pokemon I hated.  ANYWHO, let’s get down to the next 5 Pokemon!

Sandygast – Remember yesterday when I said we were about to get into some more Pokemon for the horror people out there?  Well, we’re already here!  Its design looks possessive enough on its own, but its Shiny looks so sinister that it can actually induce fear!  Now for the Pokedex entries!  In Sun, it states “Born from a sand mound playfully built by a child, this Pokémon embodies the grudges of the departed.”  Then in Moon: “It takes control of anyone who puts a hand in its mouth. And so it adds to the accumulation of its sand-mound body.”  GEEZ!  Who knew such a small creation built by a most likely well-meaning child would become the literally stuff of tropical nightmares!?  Not only is it a possessed sand castle, but it also possesses the people who probably want to test their manhood by putting a hand in the Sandygast’s mouth!  This is some hardcore scary stuff right there!  Now, onto some stuff not so scary about this thing.  It’s one of the slowest Pokemon in the game with a base Speed of only 15, and the fact that it evolves at such a high level (42), Sandygast is going to require a lot of patience to train.  Thankfully, I do like the Ground/Ghost type combination, and the scary stuff about this menace actually makes me like this Pokemon a lot.  Also, it can do just fine as a Special Attacker as long as you’re carful with who it goes up against.  It’s definitely one of the scarier Pokemon introduced in Alola and for that, you’re bound to remember it.  But it does not stop with Sandygast as you are about to find out.

Palossand – At level 42, Sandygast evolves into Palossand, whose Shiny, just like its earlier form, is very dark and fits its scary motif like a boss.  First, let’s look at the Pokedex entries despite the fact that I am already cringing in my boots!  In Sun, it says “Possessed people controlled by this Pokémon transformed its sand mound into a castle. As it evolved, its power to curse grew ever stronger.” While in Moon, we get this: “Buried beneath the castle are masses of dried-up bones from those whose vitality it has drained.”  Yikes!  So it’s even worse in Sandygast!  It doesn’t just possess you from direct contact anymore!  Its strengthened power to curse allows it to control people and drain its vitality!  It will feast upon the flesh of living beings, humans AND Pokemon alike!  I mean, I have seen an image of a Palossand eating a Pikachu by dragging into its sandy depths!  What in the literal hell am I dealing with here!?  Onto some facts that don’t want to give me nightmares, Palossand is an AWESOME design!  I really dig the design being a castle, even if it’s one made of sand.  It may be one of the slowest Pokemon in the game with a base Speed stat of only 30, but its 100 Special Attack and 110 Defense make this a viable candidate to be a Special Attacker that can tank hits!  It can also fulfill the role of healer too with the move it can learn at Level 54 called “Shore Up”, which is much like Recover, except its effect is strengthed in a Sandstorm.  In every sense of the word, Palossand has left a mark in the Pokemon franchise, and while I don’t use this a whole lot, I do love what Palossand stands for!

Pyukumuku – Now we move onto a Pokemon that doesn’t quite stand out to me in the same ways the last 2 did.  In fact, the only thing it has as far as standing out is the fact it can eject its internal organs to catch prey or attack enemies.  EWWWWW!!!!!!!!!!!  That is disgusting!  Where did I go wrong in my life?  But other than that, this Pokemon just doesn’t have a lot going for it.  In Hano Beach, it is easily outclassed by the 2 Pokemon I had just went over, and for Water types, there’s just a lot better choices you can use, even from just the Gen. 7 Pokemon, like Wishiwashi and Toxapex.  It’s also yet another slow Pokemon, and in fact one of the SLOWEST EVER!  Its base Speed is only FIVE!  It only gets 5 Speed!  That means that at Level 100, even with a Nature beneficial to Speed, it can only have a Speed stat of up to 119!  No thanks!  I guess it’s fine if you’re a defensive player, but there is just no way I would ever use this!  Its only Attacking moves are Counter and Bide, so you’re left having to use this for Status Conditions, and honestly, I’ve had just fine luck using Status conditions as a secondary effect.  This Pokemon is just a no for me, but I do not despise it.

Type: Null – Next we have a Pokemon that is the first of its kind!  Type: Null is the first Pokemon ever to have a total base stat total of 500+ that can STILL EVOLVE!  That’s actually pretty neat!  It has 59 Speed, but all the other base stats are at an even 95, putting its total base stat total at 534!  Apparently, this Pokemon was created in the Aether Foundation with the purpose of trying to create a Pokemon that is a combination of all 18 types!  I guess this shows in its design as I can see parts of this creature that looks like it could belong to multiple types such as Water, Grass, Dark, and Steel.  It is actually pretty cool in design if I do say so myself.  Another thing about this Pokemon is that you can’t just go catching this in the wild.  This is Gladeon’s signature evolutionary line, so you have to get Type: Null as a gift from him specifically.  Now, you can probably guess I like Type: Null, but I don’t love it like I do some other Pokemon in this generation.  It’s a cool Pokemon with a neat story and that’s about all she wrote.

Silvally – With enough Happiness, Type: Null will evolve into Silvally.  This disappointed a lot of people, and I can see where they are coming.  Upon evolution, the only stat that changes is its Speed, which now goes up to 95, making ALL of its stats 95.  While it is not super weak, this is very disappointing and it feels like a wasted opportunity.  It’s further supported by the fact that you can change its typing, but it makes it blatantly obvious which type it is that if you really know how to observe Silvally, it can easily be defeated.  BUT, I do like it can be any one of the 18 types, I can cater a strategy around it, and it’s an awesome design.  I actually thought it was really cute in the end credits where it was pictured with Gladeon withits mouth open.  Was it trying to EAT Gladeon’s head?  Lmao  As expected, it has a large movepool, so Silvally can actually play any part on your team, and it can do this in a way you can fit it onto any team thanks to its ability to change types.  So yeah, while I can see why people would be disappointed, I personally prefer Silvally over Type: Null.
