This is most applicable to people from countries that had large scale immigration, like USA, Canada or Australia, but could work for others.

My maternal grandmother can trace her ancestry back to colonial era USA. Our distant relative was a slave owner.

I know very little about my maternal grandfather but I believe he is just a European mix, mostly Scottish.

My paternal grandfather was a second generation American. His family immigrated from Serbia (I still have family in Montenegro today).

My paternal grandmother is a first generation American. Her parents both immigrated from Syria.
