I wonder why are specifically tip

Oct 28, 2014 by Timster
waiters & delivery drivers. I always make sure I tip but I wonder why these jobs get them.

They're doing the job they signed up for just like the girl working at the cash register, so why do we tip those people and not people working at a cash register/people cooking food/people folding clothes at a retail store. Waiters & delivery drivers aren't working any harder than these people and they're already getting payed to do their job so why give more for something that they're SUPPOSED to do. It's not like the waiter is being extra nice by serving your table.... that's what they're SUPPOSED to do. It's not like the pizza driver is being super nice to you because they decided to drive to your house, that's what they're SUPPOSED to do.

Should we tip police officers for pulling us over as well? How did the ish start?

nmh95 What the f***, Why do they not get paid more than that????? Like here in Quebec minimum wage is at 10.35 or smthg and they get paid like 8.60$/Hour.

2.13 is way too low like why would you work for that.

Tips are unfair, yes, I totally agree. The only reason they've ever come into being is so that employers of these places can show the customer a "lower" price because they have removed the service fee from the price and left it to the discretion of the customer. Also this saves the employer money because they don't have to pay their employees a full salary, they can just leave it up to the customer.

This is great for employers but really inconvenient for customers (how much to tip? who gets tips?) and unfair to the employees (people don't know what's proper to tip and take out thier frustrations on the server rather than the business management). Some places are moving to a tip-free system, and paying their employees a full wage, but until everyone does, we still have to pay that service fee.

And if there's a problem with the service, we don't take it out of that fee, we still tip at least 12-18% of the bill before taxes and discounts and then take up our complaint with the RIGHT people to handle it: ie. the management responsible for the food, service and employee training. Hold them accountable rather than taking it out of the server's/hairdresser's paycheck.

Tipped employees generally work in fields that are considered "luxuries". And the tips that are given are meant to reflect the customers level of satisfaction with the service that has been rendered. In addition, repeat customers are wise to leave tips that will encourage the person supplying the service to go "above and beyond" the next time around. Examples: A cab driver with regular customers who tip well will pick up those customers first. A server waiting on people known for tipping well puts their needs in the front of his/her mind. Hairdressers may fit you into an unusually busy schedule.
One can go through life just fine without ever using a service that involves tips. They are luxuries, and it is right to show your appreciation to a person who works to show you a good time, make you look good, or make your life more convenient.

Timster I like you and all, so don't take this personally, but I HATE when people say things like servers don't need tips etc!

Im a server and have been for 8 years and Ive NEVER seen a paycheck in my entire serving life! The ONLY money I make is off of tips and that is the same for ALL servers!

People that work cash registers get paid by their company and get a paycheck, however, servers don't get paid by their companys and tips are our only income!

CharlieBibi, the clientele where I work is great, they usually tip well. I very rarely have a night where tips aren't what I'd want them to be. BUT, if that ever happens, our restaurant has to pay us directly at least minimum wage for the amount of hours I work. If I work 10 hours, I'm guaranteed $70.

m2thamax I wasn't saying you guys didn't need them I was just confused about how their pay works. So from my understanding servers do NOT get payed hourly like everyone else. Instead they make all their money from customers and commission??

nmh95 Okay that makes sense. Thanks finklestein123

nmh95 Say you make more than enough money in tips to meet your minimum wage, is it common for people to just stash money in their pocket and act like they didn't get payed enough so they can make money on top of their tip? If that makes sense.

Yes Timster ! All of my income is from tips! 100%
Sent by M2thamax,Oct 28, 2014
Timster, yea, you're able to keep it! I don't know of anyone who has done that, but there's people who use coupons & cheat the system, so they can get an extra $8-10 every so often. :P
