A 9 year old girl. You know how I'm not exactly a stereotypical cliche of a female?
Well, this kid looooves pink! And glitter, apparently. After she left last time, there was glitter everywhere! How does that even happen? O_O
Anywho, she doesn't understand time. As in an analogue clock and telling time.
We managed the clock, but oh my! She would not accept midday as pm and midnight as am.
On the 12 hour clock, I get the confusion. But I explained it using the 24 hour clock.
How 12 is midday and 0 is midnight and the new day starts at midnight.
She just didn't believe me! She thought after 23:00 comes 24:00. So I showed her on my phone. I changed the time to 23:59 and we stared at it.
Midnight came.
0:00
Date change!
...She still wasn't convinced.
I just set her homework to watch clocks.
I just, I can't! *sigh*
I do get the confusion though. She's never been awake for midnight. I hadn't at that age either. XD
It's not even a real job, Unkown. I have no contractual obligations with these people. :P
My ad hoc job is contractual, but that's once or twice a month.
I could still become a Frooks pro, but that doesn't seem very fun. :P
I gotta have a real job to quit. ;)
Tditdatdwt1234d I don't like the, "It is because I say so" approach with teaching. The best way to learn is through self understanding. When you see the process and translate it to your own language, rather than my language. So I try presenting many opportunities to get something rather than just my favourite way. :P
I mean some people learn with just applying formulae, no questions asked.
But they're not the ones whose parents identify as needing a tutor. ;)
You know how you say good morning before 12 pm and good evening around 6 or 7? Well what am I supposed to say right at 12 pm? Saying good noon just sounds off to me. I need help :(
Yoshitomi - The best way to teach time is make it relatable, you could always bring up what happens at New Year, she surely has stayed up for it.
Also the analogue clock is easier to grasp than a digital clock. Focus on that first. :p By her age, she should be telling time to the minute according to the new national curriculum. loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooool :p
I meant to loooooool at the fact that our national curriculum is really unrealistic for a lot of children, not loooool at her. I'm just tired. :( :p I read the Year 2 sats paper for next year (the new one :p) and the children need to know how to tell the time to the nearest 5 minutes. :O
