I work in a community group home. Anyway, we had the guys out yesterday and while were loading the guys in the van, this group of people sitting in the car next to us were looking and laughing. I can understand a YOUNG child making looking and not understanding what was wrong. Actually, NOTHING is wrong with the individuals I support. Just because they have intellectual disabilities and/or in a wheelchair doesn't mean that you have to stare and laugh at them. It drives me CRAZY when teens and/or adults have to be so stinking RUDE! Why don't you try and show some COMPASSION! How would you like it if someone laughed and stared at you if you had a disability? I bet you wouldn't like it. However, like I told a co-worker, I just try and ignore those people. They obviously have nothing better to do.
On the plus side. One time I had someone out to eat and a guy came up to me and told me something along the lines like, "you're doing a good thing". It's been so long since someone said that to me, I forget exactly what he said.
I LOVE what I do and I LOVE the individuals I support. Sure there are rough days, but there are days that are so rewarding!
Another thing that just irritates me is when people use the "R" word. So some RESPECT and don't use that word.
