SUBJECT:     Pro-Life Organization Expected to Return to Campus Next Week

An event by a pro-life organization will occur on the Modesto A. Maidique Campus on Monday, February 13. Graphic anti-abortion displays will be exhibited on campus in the grassy area behind the Graham Center. The event is sponsored by the Canadian-based Center for Bio-Ethical Reform. The Center for Bio-Ethical Reform has visited campuses throughout the country and Florida, and has exhibited at FIU in the past.

Although the exhibit has created controversy on many campuses, it is important for us to remember that as a public university, FIU is a place where the First Amendment is exercised, as is the free exchange of speech, no matter how offensive that speech may be. The right to free speech, the right to dissent, and the right of peaceful assembly is and will be observed.

We recognize that this exhibit may be distasteful to some members of the university community. The university, however, must maintain its role as a forum for reasonable dialogue. We encourage FIU students, faculty, and staff to use this opportunity to examine and express their views. Debate is a healthy part of the learning process.

Questions may be directed to the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs
