Episode 3: out of the shadows (Dylan, Sonja, Kimmy, Julie and Ron's story)
(Flashback) (During the Outbreak) Dylan is running through the forest, he is sweating and panting, he is scared, and tired but he can't stop, he need to get back to his house to save his family, from those things, Dylan continues running before he trips on some weeds, he leg tangled around them, the then notices a man coming towards him, he calls out for help, but as it approaches he realises it is a zombie, Dylan panics, he grasps at his leg trying to free it, calling out for help, as it gets close he closes his eyes and says “Sonja, Kimmy, Julie, I'm sorry and I love you” the zombie grabs his arm before Dylan's eyes begin to ring, disoriented he pushes the dead zombie off his arm before seeing another man approach, it's Ron, Ron frees Dylan's leg and hands him a pistol, “you know how to use that?” Ron asks, Dylan replies “no, I've never held a gun before”. “Well then” Ron says “your gonna have to learn”.
(Present) Dylan is at their target range they set up, with cans and other objects on a number of fences, Dylan's shooting is almost perfect, Ron tells him that he is a better shot than he was the day they met, Steven tells them the group is ready, Dylan, Ron and Steven announce that there is a bottle of wine up for grabs for whoever hits the most targets, Steven whispers to Ron telling him he hid a second bottle away for them, the group compete in the competition but nobody comes close to beating Maria “you don't stand between and Italian and their wine” she says taking her bottle. Sierra sits nearby, upset as she miss quiet a few of her targets, Dylan tells her when he first shot a gun he actually fell on his ass from the recoil so the fact that she was still standing proves she is gonna be good at it “Just keep practising and you will get the hang of it” Christian watches on in disapproving what is happening. Sierra heads down to the river to chat with Kimmy, they try to invite Annie over but once again she just walks away, Lucas shows up at the river and begins hitting on Kimmy again, but Kimmy refuses, Sierra asks why and says Lucas is cute but Kimmy is not ready yet.
(Flashback) Sonja is packing things frantically while trying to keep Julie from screaming and crying, Kimmy is worried about her father and her boyfriend, she wants to go after them, Sonja tells Kimmy that she needs to just wait for her father and then they will go get her boyfriend and instructs Kimmy to get the photo albums from upstairs, Sonja grabs Julie and explains to her that there are bad things outside and that she needs to stay quiet, she then heads upstairs to find Kimmy but she isn't there, she went after her boyfriend, Kimmy runs as fast as she can, managing to sneak past anything, to reach her boyfriends house, she gets inside and he has been bit, she tells him “it's ok, my parents can patch you up” she helps him into the car and they head back to her place.
(Present) Zakhai is loading up the car for Mark and Katy to go back to the diner (to once again wait for Oscar) Jill asks them if they need a third on their trip but they say they are fine, Jill then notices Christian who hasn't moved in a while, she takes him some food but he won't speak or eat, Jill tells Doug and Paul about it and asks them to tell Dylan (to avoid her getting her head bitten off again by him) they agree to. Roxy is seen walking through the woods, she is picking up some smaller sticks, as she walks along she hears a noise, she pulls out her gun and points it towards the noise, Eric comes out of a bush, “I almost killed you” Eric apologises for scaring her “I've been waiting forever” she says, they begin to make out taking their clothes off.
Maria offers her Wine to Sonja and Kaylah, the sit and relax, Sonja makes a comment about being wrong and that this place is safe and peaceful, and that she should have questioned Dylan's judgement, Doug tells Dylan about Christian not eating or talking, Dylan thanks him for telling him and that he'll go talk to Christian and see what's wrong, Doug tells him that it was Jill that noticed it, Dylan doesn't say anything and heads over the Christian's caravan, Sierra and Kimmy sit by a fire, eating some baked beans, Lucas comes over again, Sierra tells her that she is gonna give them some alone time and go practice her shooting again. Kimmy explains to Lucas the reason she is turning him down is that she lost her boyfriend in the outbreak and since then she has been to scared to get close to somebody else, Lucas tells her that he is ok to wait. Dylan talks to Christian and asks why he isn't eating, Christian explains that the whole camp have lost their way, and that him teaching the children to fight is a sin and that they should be learning to be good upstanding citizens, not shooting things and sneaking off into the woods together, Dylan tells him he is doing what is necessary for the group and asks how he can make it right with Christian, Christian tells him “you need to confess your sins”.
(Flashback) Dylan arrives and home with Ron, Sonja and Kimmy are desperately trying to save Kimmy's boyfriend's life, Ron begins trying himself and explains he was in the military years ago, but the boyfriend dies, Dylan and Ron discuss their option on where to go from here, Ron talks about a Caravan park that he goes to when hunting, and that it is a quiet area and that they can make it there in a few days, as they say it Kimmy's boyfriend awakens as a zombie, Dylan pulls out his gun and shoots, the backfire throws him to the ground, he shoots the zombie 4 times in the chest before finally hitting the head.
(Present) Dylan talks about Kimmy's boyfriend and tells him that what he did there was not a sin, he talks about what he did at the church when they saved Christian and explains that was not a sin either, he confesses that “when Kimmy was a baby Julie hadn't been born yet, Sonja and I were having a falling out, mostly about my drinking and gambling, one day, late afternoon I speed down the road in a rage, drunk off my ass, and I hit a little boy, he was in a coma for weeks before he died, I killed that kid because of my own selfish and violent rage, after a few years in prison I was released on good behaviour and vowed to make it up to that family, but I never did, so that is my sin, my only sin, and I seek forgiveness for it” Christian accepts him confession and tells him that he is not stupid, he knows those creatures are evil but wishes for the kids to be left out of it, that way if there is a cure out there, they can survive without having to repent for their sins, Sierra continues shooting her targets, she is hitting them a lot better now, as she reloads the gun a zombie comes out of the shadows and bites her, Sierra screams, calling for help as she falls to the ground and it start biting at her stomach, the group get over to her, Maria shooting the zombie from a distance, Dylan looks down and her and says “I'm sorry” he puts a bullet in her head to put her out of her misery, he looks back at Christian who tells him “he'll need to confess again.

the group is at a breaking point where some want to leave while others want to stay, Mark and Katy discover something at the diner and Maria's story is told.
