Rick's Top 40 Favourite TSC Songs of 2015 (4-1)

Mar 27, 2016 by ricktworick1
Notes:
- All songs sent in between TSC 189 to 225 are eligible
- This is based on my personal opinion. Please do not take any offense from what I think of. Strictly my own thoughts
- Contrary to some weird belief, I don't believe that my music taste is better than anyone else's. This list is for you all to have some fun and laugh at possible comments I make.
- I also include some of my own entries, but don't worry, I'm not that arrogant to have more than 10 entries about myself

4. Leona Lewis - Fire Under My Feet

Sent by #Ianfitz0012 in TSC200, placed 1st with 131 points.

Damn, there is always this pattern that as soon as an act gets dropped from Simon Cowell's music label, their music become SIGNIFICANTLY before and stop sucking ass. It happened to Cher Lloyd who went from annoying, going-nowhere pop tracks to a pop-ballad that actually suited her very well, and the reverse transition happened to Leona, she went from the soppy, always-boring ballads to some great pop stuff that 'Fire Under My Feet' definitely is. A new attitude, finally some energy, and obviously commercial failure, since Cowell did everything in order to make her flop. He can go fuck off for that, at least she's now musically more interesting.

3. Naughty Boy - Runnin' (Lose It All) [feat. Beyonce & Arrow Benjamin]

Sent by #Monrooster in TSC218, placed 2nd with 83 points.

Christ, this is amazing. The first time I listened to it, I couldn't believe that Beyonce was able to pull off such an amazing tune - I mean her music is usually of high quality, but her voice suits brilliantly to this light, breezy dance track. The verses are absolutely stunning - the emotions evoked in a more clubby song are considered a true rarity, and both her and Arrow Benjamin complement this PERFECTLY. I'm still extremely obsessed with "Runnin'", and some people noted that me fanboying this song has become quite unhealthy. I can't help that.

2. NEEDTOBREATHE - Brother (feat. Gavin DeGraw)

Sent by Talian in TSC193, placed 1st with 112 points.

While we are talking about Christ, here's a Christian song. I usually hate the type of music coming from this genre, but this is simply excellent. Instead of going the obvious pop route (which hurts my ears - why make a pop song about praising your religion? Only Michelle Williams did that right, and maybe Hillsong), NEEDTOBREATHE decided to go more indie-rock, and the featuring vocals of DeGraw were simply made for the production of this tune. Excellent progression from verses to chorus, and damn that emotion. If there were more songs like this in the Christian music genre, I'd maybe convert back into Christianity.

AND THE WINNER IS...

1. Karmin - Didn't Know You

Sent by Mittens in TSC209, placed 1st with 127 points.

At some point in 2015, I lost all my hope for Karmin. After the release of "Brokenhearted", a great pop track with some actual bearable rapping skills, everything else they put out was absolute clusterfuck, with elements of music that belonged nowhere except maybe for restrooms, where people went out of their minds pooping while listening to utter trashy songs like the terrible "Acapella". So how come Karmin snatched my #1 spot for the best TSC song of 2015?

Most importantly, there is that huge surprise factor that this duo was able to pull off something as brilliant and unexpected as that. I'd have never thought that Karmin would do such a weird concept, with subtle elements becoming more audible in the chorus - making the progression extremely interesting and captivating. Of course, her tone also makes this song much more intriguing than it probably should be, and I will take that.

Another thing, that was probably one of the very few songs that completely blew me away on the first listen. Most of the stuff on my list are songs of high quality, but almost none of them, maybe except for Runnin', made me go like "WOAH, THIS IS AMAZING!" That requires some brilliant musical skills (and a good production team) to have a song like that.

It's also hilarious that the person who sent this entry, Mittens, appears in the TSC like once a year, and whenever she plays, she usually FUCKING WINS. She did it with Dido's "End Of Night" in 2014 (another song with subtle elements in progression), and she did it with Karmin. I honestly feel like had she participated more, she'd be a TSC legend by now.

Thank you all for following my list! At the end of 2016, I will release another Top 40!
