- Contrary to some weird belief, I don't believe that my music taste is better than anyone else's, although I have no idea if it's useful to post that because every year there are some idiots crying about their favs. This list is for you all to have some fun and laugh at possible comments I make. Yes, I did have a lot of experience in music, going to music school etc., that doesn't make my opinion more valid than anyone else's.
40. C.I.V.A - Why
I love how an act that is basically used for satirical purposes released a better song than most of the big names in the K-pop industry in 2016. It's pretty funny how this song actually reached #1 on the MNET chart, proving that sometimes Korean music industry has a glimpse of the right idea on what they are doing. Back to music, this is a cover of DIVA's "Why Do You Call Me." I don't care what kind of controversy CIVA got into in first place, because they definitely made that bland DIVA song much more interesting. Surely, the modern version unfortunately suffers from the overbear of audio at times and that weird rap breakdown that is kind of left-field. It's been this kind of a year I guess.
39. Brave Girls - Deepened
I usually shit on K-pop's attempts at R&B, but Brave Brothers got it so right with his own group. This ambient feeling, with elements of both old-school & modern R&B go quite well together, and the vocals never feel too dominant in comparison to production. It's just a pity that their return to the public received a rather lukewarm response, because I'm sure if a group like SISTAR got this song, it'd be a massive hit, although Hyorin would probably manage to make the song worse by purposely showing off her vocal.
38. Snuper - It's Raining
Snuper is probably one of the best male groups in K-pop at the moment, simply due to the consistency of their high quality feature releases. "It's Raining" has all the elements that made 80s music great, in addition to the cheesy k-pop elements (like unnecessary rap breakdown that seems like a typical theme these days). Honestly, it just makes me hope that with the influx of new boy groups, they will follow the path of Snuper and get their producers to do some 80s style music as an inspiration from...well, who the fuck am I kidding, nobody's gonna follow that advice because Snuper are nugus and they will just copy the high quality Big Bang tracks. Oh wait, did I say high quality? I apologise for that.
37. Bolbbalgan4 - Galaxy
It took this song quite a while to really grow on me, but I am happy for my patience and my decision to re-listen to this. The instrumental during the bridge reminds me of early Maroon 5 vibes - the times when Adam Levine and his group actually released some decent music. That part is probably the biggest highlight of "Galaxy," but the rest of it is quite nice too, especially the rapping that actualy suit the theme of the tune. This song got extremely popular in Korea despite its so-called Indie category, but we have to remember, Korean Indie music generally sucks and it was probably pure luck that a song of better quality got popular there.
