Rick's Top 40 Favourite K-Pop songs of 2016 (32-29)

Feb 8, 2017 by ricktworick1
To balance out the worst of list, the best of one is larger so the butthurt goes away!

Notes:
- Feature songs released between Jan 1 2016 to Dec 31 2016 are eligible
- This is based on my personal opinion - I mean there's a reason it's MY LIST. Please do not take any offense from what I think of. Strictly my own thoughts
- Contrary to some weird belief, I don't believe that my music taste is better than anyone else's, although I have no idea if it's useful to post that because every year there are some idiots crying about their favs. This list is for you all to have some fun and laugh at possible comments I make. Yes, I did have a lot of experience in music, going to music school etc., that doesn't make my opinion more valid than anyone else's.

32. HISTORY - Queen

This song is only good thanks to the one of the most memorable beats ever created in K-pop. Surely, this yolo-inspired song has some terrible parts during the pre-chorus where you can hear rather unwanted trap elements, but the riff is executed in an unusually effective way, with the sax barely sounding like a saxophone anyway. Maybe Big Bang should learn something after that disastorous chorus that happened in "Bang Bang Bang" but I bet G-Dragon's got something "smarter" on his mind.

31. Oh My Girl - Windy Day

After the brilliant "Closer" in 2015, last year provided this group with consistently high quality of music. While the verses are a bit dull and boring, the chorus and that breakdown really make up for it, and I love how some elements of indian culture are implemented the way that it actually oddly suits the structure of the song. I can say that for K-pop Oh My Girl's music could be considered to some extent experimental as they are trying to branch out with elements that other k-pop groups would never dare to even think about - this is probably one of the reasons why I bought their repackaged mini-album in Korea.

30. Dal Shabet - Someone Like U

Why the fuck did this amazing song completely bomb on the charts? It has both the elements of early and late 80s music, arguably the best era in modern music, the girls all look wonderful, the music video is actually pretty great...I suppose the biggest problem lies within the mentality of korean music fans who are not actually interested in music. As we can see, all you have to do to be trendy is to either slip on the stage 7 times and get people to feel sorry for you or be from a big company like YG or JYP. Anyway, Someone Like U is one of the most underrated songs from Dal Shabet yet, and if you have missed out on this song, it's your chance to listen to it now.

29. WJSN (Cosmic Girls) - Secret

Another song that took quite awhile to grow on me, but here it is. Honestly, one side of me wants to throw eggs at their label for not making "Secret" their debut song, because it really fits the concept of the group flawlessly. My other side actually feels like that had "Secret" been their first song, people would have missed out on this brilliant, old-school-kpop-inspired tune from Shinsadong Tiger, so maybe it's a good thing that they debuted with horrible "MoMoMo" and decent, but extremely messy "Catch Me," because the general public actually recognises this song (but they don't really know who sings it because barely 2% of koreans actually give a shit about K-pop).
