Rick's Top 40 Favourite K-Pop songs of 2016 (24-21)

Feb 15, 2017 by ricktworick1
To balance out the worst of list, the best of one is larger so the butthurt goes away!

Notes:
- Feature songs released between Jan 1 2016 to Dec 31 2016 are eligible
- This is based on my personal opinion - I mean there's a reason it's MY LIST. Please do not take any offense from what I think of. Strictly my own thoughts
- Contrary to some weird belief, I don't believe that my music taste is better than anyone else's, although I have no idea if it's useful to post that because every year there are some idiots crying about their favs. This list is for you all to have some fun and laugh at possible comments I make. Yes, I did have a lot of experience in music, going to music school etc., that doesn't make my opinion more valid than anyone else's.

24. Berry Good - Angel

This song was released during the same week of Twice's, Seventeen's, Lovelyz' and probably everyone's huge comebacks, so it's a huge shame that this amazing single got completely buried down. Berry Good had their great debut with their cover of Click B's "Love Letter," but until "Angel" their comebacks were rather unremarkable, so now that they have some amazing masterpieces on their discography, they get ignored even more. The instrumentation here is pretty brilliant, with a great melodic line, and the production that really lets the members of this group absolutely shine. Their vocal showoff at the end is a bit too weary for the listeners, but that still doesn't change that this tune is awesome.

23. K.A.R.D - Oh NaNa

Another one with elements of tropical house, so it was pretty apparent that this song was bound to make an appearance on my favourites list. It's a great thing that Somin finally got to (pre)debut in a proper group, not the pseudo-cute thing that made A-Pink (and no other group) popular. It's a bit funny how DSP Media's most popular artists are April, after the losses of the more relevant KARA and Rainbow, but what can you do when the management even admitted that they don't have an idea on what the fuck they are doing. Anyway, let's hope that KARD will change that label's fortunes for the better - that is possible if they continue to release great stuff like "Oh NaNa."

22. Taeyeon - Why

Her turd-inspired ballad "Rain" made an appearance on my worst of list, while "11:11" is probably a suggestion that good production is rarely given to Taeyeon, both by the song quality and the name, as that time only appears for one minute during a 24 hour day. However, there's always an exception to the rule of "shitty SNSD solo songs" and "Why" is definitely one of the biggest positive surprises that SM has delivered. It is even more astonishing that the "Middle"-inspired-from-DJ-Snake production was given for Tae as her solo comeback, maybe trying to make up for the horrid crap she was forced to release as a part of SM Station. Great summer release overall.

21. R3hab x f(Amber+Luna) - Wave

This barely even qualifies as K-pop, but fuck it, 2 out of 4 f(x) members are there collabing with a western DJ, plus this tune was released as a part of SM Station, so there's that "it's not k-pop" argument gone. Thanks to R3hab being the main producers, there are so many hard beats in this EDM song that Korean music teams would never even bother to put in a song, mostly because they would be too scared that the group's comeback would flop because it doesn't fit the image of an ugly conservative netizen that likes to fall into depression. Maybe SM Station wasn't such a horrible musical excursion, but then why were there so many horrible bland ballads released as a part of that project?
