Rick's Top 40 Favourite K-Pop songs of 2016 (20-17)

Feb 18, 2017 by ricktworick1
To balance out the worst of list, the best of one is larger so the butthurt goes away!

Notes:
- Feature songs released between Jan 1 2016 to Dec 31 2016 are eligible
- This is based on my personal opinion - I mean there's a reason it's MY LIST. Please do not take any offense from what I think of. Strictly my own thoughts
- Contrary to some weird belief, I don't believe that my music taste is better than anyone else's, although I have no idea if it's useful to post that because every year there are some idiots crying about their favs. This list is for you all to have some fun and laugh at possible comments I make. Yes, I did have a lot of experience in music, going to music school etc., that doesn't make my opinion more valid than anyone else's.

20. I.O.I - Very Very Very

IOI has only one good feature track, and it's no surprise that this great upbeat song was produced by none other than JYP - he usually knows what works in pop music and which layers of production should be used. While the pace and some elements probably derive from Girls' Generation's iconic "Gee," it still has got enough element of uniqueness, something k-pop isn't really known for. This should balance out the horrible mess that "Dream Girls" undoubtedly was...oh wait, I forgot about their goodbye song which will probably land a spot on my 2017 worst of.

19. Mamamoo - Taller Than You

I really like Mamamoo's music in general, but I have always felt like they never decided to branch out of their pop-r&b-retro sound, and I wanted them to do something that would REALLY stand out. When "Taller Than You" got released, I was extremely surprised that they decided to go with a rap-hiphop track, with the beat inspired by Eminem's "The Real Slim Shady." Not only does this surprisingly show their different side, it also works quite well. All of them are probably talented enough to do whatever the fuck they want in music, Moonbyul is a rapper, but she can sing, most of them are vocalists, but can drop some rap mixtapes, too. Okay, the final 30 seconds or so is really weird and unnecessary, but that doesn't really prevent me from really enjoying this great tune.

18. BTS - Save Me

Hey, wanna know the most cancerous, irrational, stupidly-obsessed-with-everything and crazy fandoms in k-pop? Forget about EXO, their fangirls (and boys) are nothing compared to what BTS was able to achieve with their fans. Literally every k-pop video that I watch usually has comments like "WHERE ARE MY ARMY'S" or "ARMY'S HERE TO SUPPORT WHATEVER GROUP," and I am just amazed how much their label were able to brainwash people to just be as brainless as possible. Fortunately, BTS' discography is far from horrible, the one defense that their fans have in terms of quality of the group. "Save Me" has that weird, slowed down synth during the chorus which works really well and the beat never dies down throughout the whole song. It's a pity that rest of their stuff are kind of middle-of-the-road, I will just wait until they release something as good as "Save Me" again, however long it is gonna take.

17. D.Holic - Color Me Rad

The one question about this group that should be answered: who the fuck writes and produces their songs? They have this great experimental pop sound in almost every release, and since their debut they haven't given us a bad feature. "Color Me Rad" was already reviewed in my TSC Best Of List, so TSC participants probably already knew that this song was going to make this list, but my point is, D.Holic consistently shows that even with a low budget, a great song can be produced. Maybe they should get Bonus Baby their songwriter, that'd help them to actually give their music some proper tuning.
