Rick's Top 40 Favourite K-Pop songs of 2016 (12-9)

Feb 22, 2017 by ricktworick1
To balance out the worst of list, the best of one is larger so the butthurt goes away!

Notes:
- Feature songs released between Jan 1 2016 to Dec 31 2016 are eligible
- This is based on my personal opinion - I mean there's a reason it's MY LIST. Please do not take any offense from what I think of. Strictly my own thoughts
- Contrary to some weird belief, I don't believe that my music taste is better than anyone else's, although I have no idea if it's useful to post that because every year there are some idiots crying about their favs. This list is for you all to have some fun and laugh at possible comments I make. Yes, I did have a lot of experience in music, going to music school etc., that doesn't make my opinion more valid than anyone else's.

12. Fiestar - Mirror

This song is like a more ambient version of Rainbow's brilliant feature track "Black Swan," however, thanks to more variety in the production, Fiestar's take on it sounds even better. I can even hear some similarities to the sultry elements in Miss A's "Touch," and that's also a great thing, because it just lifts the whole product up significantly. It's just such injustice that a girl group as good as Fiestar, with members both having musical and variety skills, is considered to be nugus in Korea, proving that having good music means nothing to netizens out there. Poor girls.

11. Various - I Only Want You

Probably a song nobody here expected, Various are such ultra nugus, and to add insult to injury, they have such a fucking unsearchable group name, probably as bad as that girl who debuted as "I." The song itself starts with the same intro as Taeyang's horrid excuse for music "Ringa Linga," but thankfully that was only a scary moment before this awesome tune actually got going. The verses here are probably one of the catchiest ones ever made in the history of K-pop, so it's even more surprising that it was given to artists as irrelevant as Various, proving that brand power means no shit if you can't get good songwriters and producers.

10. CSP - Hua Hin (feat. Kang Minhee of Miss $)

Finding an actually good K-rap song is almost an impossibility nowadays, thanks to horrible acts that are under Keith Ape's label (him included), or some shitty music from Jay Park, or even worse - Truedy. Imagine my surprise when clicking this link redirected me into a rap-pop hybrid that actually has some quirky but somehow poppy elements which lift the whole package up the line. Not only that, the rapper here actually sounds like he uses some proper technique, and rapping is the only style of music where appropriate technique is actually needed to sound any good. The chorus by that member of Miss $ is also executed quite well, and well, that drop is also pretty amazing. Let's hope K-pop comes up with more of such stuff, although we all know that won't happen in near future.

9. Sugardonut - Imagine, Close Your Eyes

Korean indie usually sucks ass, as I mentioned when Bolbbalgan4's "Galaxy" made it onto my list. I mean, you have some horrible messy trends like SEENROOT's hideous song from 2015 that is now a hit in Korea and that makes you question whether the shift hours in their country have not affected their brain cells. Sugardonut's electro-synth song is one of the very few examples where K-indie artists got it so right, with soothing, but somehow effective Mumford & Sons/Coldplay hybrid verses and that amazing drop-chorus that I will probably remember for the next few years. Also, the song title is pretty much on point, if I just imagine and close my eyes, the song is even better.
