Rick's Top 40 Favourite K-Pop songs of 2016 (8-5)

Feb 24, 2017 by ricktworick1
To balance out the worst of list, the best of one is larger so the butthurt goes away!

Notes:
- Feature songs released between Jan 1 2016 to Dec 31 2016 are eligible
- This is based on my personal opinion - I mean there's a reason it's MY LIST. Please do not take any offense from what I think of. Strictly my own thoughts
- Contrary to some weird belief, I don't believe that my music taste is better than anyone else's, although I have no idea if it's useful to post that because every year there are some idiots crying about their favs. This list is for you all to have some fun and laugh at possible comments I make. Yes, I did have a lot of experience in music, going to music school etc., that doesn't make my opinion more valid than anyone else's.

8. Hyosung - Find Me (feat. D.Action)

Who'd have ever thought that Hyosung would release a song as good as that. When it comes to her group, I always considered Jieun as the person that has that charms as a solo, with some great bops like "25." Hyosung, on the other hand, was always seen by me as someone who gets solos for the fact that she has the most publicity out of all of the members of Secret - Into You was really a kind of a song that would have made it onto my worst of list. "Find Me" changes that, turning her into a queen of gays, as this song just sounds like something that would be played in LGBT events. Gloria Gaynor who?

7. Wonder Girls - Why So Lonely

It's sad to see this amazing girl group disband, but at least they have ended their careers while they were still at the peak. Everyone complained about how JYP's decision to send them to America killed their popularity, yet "Why So Lonely" reached the higher parts of Korean Year-End charts, proving that they didn't fade into obscurity at all. It's also not hard to see why this song fared so well commercially, this brilliant pop-reggae fusion works so well, even when the chorus sounds a bit weaker than the verses. What is surprising is that this structure almost never works in practice, but by infusing some reggae the vibe of this tune is so strong that you just have to admit that having a light chorus in comparison to verses is surprisingly a logical decision.

6. Oh My Girl - Liar Liar

People who have got to know me quite well are always quite surprised by how much in advance I gather a list of songs to make my rankings. While creating this list, I knew right away that Oh My Girl's hard stomping "Liar Liar" would make it to the higher parts of my top 40, it was just a question where exactly. The tune itself is so extremely catchy that I couldn't get it out of my head for like a period of 6 months - that's how memorable this song is. The only drawback here probably falls towards the production aspect, while brilliant, it's filled with multiple layers of instrumentations that it might get a bit too weary after awhile. Still, Oh My Girl showed that 2016 was the year of their popularity increase thanks to quality releases like that, and I do genuinely hope that 2017 treats them even better.

5. BLACKPINK - Boombayah

Another BLACKPINK song on this, geez. I love how some delusional fucks thought that I have some irrational hatred towards this group, while 2 of their songs made it into my list - guess it's too hard for people to handle the truth that "Whistle" was a horrible excuse for a song. Instead, "Boombayah" does something that "Whistle" does not manage to do throughout the whole song - it actually gets going, and not from the very late, it just punches your face at the very start. Sure, it does sound a bit like 2NE1's "I Am The Best," but as previously mentioned, Teddy is BLACKPINK's main producer, so don't expect anything really innovative to come up. Still, their debut proved that YG Entertainment is still capable of making good music, it was just the fact that they completely misfired at their first attempt.
