that they had all those people only being potential returnees and they had to spend time and money campaigning for votes and get several months off work and then the ones that didn't make it are just kinda screwed, i hope CBS sends them on a nice vacation or something at least

CBS doesn't owe them anything. They knew there was a chance they wouldn't make it, so it was their risk to take time off and spend money to campaign.
