"Do you want your daughter to have 75 cents when she deserves $1?" It seems like she's someone with a strong feminist support, right?
Yet in her Ivy Park clothing line, which she said she hoped would be "empowering" to women, she pays her employees in Sri Lanka (mostly young female seamstresses) 63 cents per hour. The "employees" work 60 hour weeks and are forced to contribute a large portion of their salaries to on-site accommodations where they are locked in at night.
So, the women making her clothes are paid less than half of what a living wage in the area is and are locked in at night to the tiny rooms they are forced to rent from their employers. If that's not exploitation, then I don't know what is.
What I think makes it all the more worse is that Beyonce is selling these garments at such giant markups (some are over $200) so she can get a huge chunk of cash form each sale. If you're selling them for that much, shouldn't you be OK with paying your workers a living wage? Apparently she thinks adding to her already enormous fortune is more important than the lives of thousands of Sri Lankans.
In the same interview, she told Elle the essence of Ivy Park was "to celebrate every woman", but apparently this does not apply to the poor women in third world countries she is exploiting.
