Welcome to the semi finals! I did not expect to blaze through this season as I did but...yeah! We are down to 4 and just two more rounds to go!
So this round is all about CINEMATOGRAPHY! I wanna see movies that truly look beautiful in the way that they were shot whether that is through the use of colour, focus, depth, aspect ratio you name it. I just wanna see a gorgeous looking movie.
as someone who studies media, has made 2 short films, done photography and has LITERALLY did a unit that specializes in cinematography if i lose i will riot!
Manila in the Claws of Light (1975) Dir. Lino Brocka
Have we had a foreign arthouse submission yet? If not, allow me to be the first! This is a truly beautiful film about a young Filipino man from the countryside who arrives in Manila to search for his lost love Ligaya. Along the way, he faces many hardships and traumas in his quest. This is a beautiful film in a very unconventional way. I love the way in which it turns the grunginess and poverty of the poor parts of Manila into beautiful images. It’s so powerful that by the end of the film, the city itself feels like a character in its own right. It’s also a fascinating film that combines social realism with Filipino class and gender politics along with a healthy dose of tragedy. A truly must-see film that I hope you enjoy for its transfixing images and complex themes.
