I see a number of blogs and comments today remarking on the new castings as "change" or saying "change happens" and "change is good."
Let me tell you a little story. A company I used to work for had "Change" as one of its core values. In the beginning, this was great, as people understood it as "find places where you can make a positive change in the way we do things" and it empowered people to really improve processes and product alike.
That lasted about 3 months.
It quickly became an excuse used by management to force employees to deal with unpopular new policies. "Change IS a core value" they would say. Morale was never lower. They lost a LOT of good people, and eventually had to abandon "Change" as a core value because it became a joke.
My point here - change is NOT always a good thing. No, we don't have to just like it for the sake of it being change. So, please, stop telling people to get over it as if they are idiots for disliking change.
After all, though a bit hyperbolic here, the following things were ALSO change:
- The Holocaust
- The election of (insert name of President you hate here)
- Genocides in Africa and Eastern Europe
And before you shoot down those ideas - just remember that most of those ideas came about because someone ran around telling a public that it was time for a change - then used that mandate to ram terrible things through.
