Can someone explain the difference

Between Gail Weathers and Sydney Prescott in SCREAM movies. I know Courtney Cox is Gail and she plays some news reporter but are they both harassed by the killer? Is it told from Sydney's view? I never watched in full but randomly watching Scream 2 now and Gail's friend just got killed as if she was the harassed final girl from movie 1 like Sydney was so now I'm cuntfused.
