:::::SCENE 1:::::

*June 2, 2017*

**62.5% voted for Zale’s group to continue down the highway**

As the sun beats down on them, Zale, Nate, Eden and Chandler make their way down the highway with their bags and weapons on them. Littered with vacant cars, the highway is long with the city a few days walk away. On the side of the highway are fully grown trees and uncut grass.

CHANDLER: Can this day get any hotter?
ZALE: Try not to think about it.
CHANDLER: Kind of hard not to with the sun melting the flesh from my bones.

Eden turns around and vomits near on the ground near a car’s tire. The others look at her as she slowly stands up straight, wipes her mouth and turns back to them.

EDEN: Sorry.
ZALE: It’s ok. Here, you might be dehydrated.

Zale hands her a water bottle and watches as she takes small sips from it before handing it back.

EDEN: Thanks.
ZALE: Don’t mention it.
NATE: And don’t mention stuff like that anymore, Chandler. It’s distasteful.
CHANDLER: Distasteful? What part of living in a zombie infested world is not distasteful!?
ZALE: Hey, keep it down.

Chandler turns to Eden with a look of annoyance on her face.

CHANDLER: Look, you need to suck it up. The worlds gone to shit and if you think you’ll ever get back to that life you once had, think again. I don’t…I mean we don’t have time to deal with your diva ways. Either you woman-up and learn to not be so weak or go out there on your own and let us do what we can to survive without being held back. You contribute nothing to the group besides slight nods and vomit. You don’t help get food. You make us kill the zombies. You drink our water. You waste our time. So like I said, either you’re fully a member of this team or get the fuck out.

A hush falls upon the group as the harshness of the words sink in. Zale, visibly angry, gets up close to Chandler and looks her square in the eyes.

ZALE: Leave her alone or YOU will be the one on your own.

He stands back as he and Chandler glare daggers at each other. Nate looks over at Eden and nods for her to follow him. Eden looks back as Zale and Chandler begin to follow. Zale looks at her and a softness eases away the anger he had just felt.

The four of them continue down the road towards the unknown.

:::::SCENE 2:::::

Opening up a can of black olives, Danielle pops two in her mouth and walks over to the rest of her group seated in the living room.

DANIELLE: Anyone?

Kevin reaches for the can as Danielle plops down on the couch.

KINSLEY: So what’s the plan today?
STACEY: We need to work on securing the windows and doors.
DANIELLE: Kevin and I will work on that. I think the rest of you should look for food.
KEVIN: Why do I have to do the physical labor?
STACEY: Because, little brother, you get easily distracted.
DANIELLE: Can’t risk having to go out and find you again.

Kevin sighs and passes the can over to Stacey, who pops one olive in her mouth before getting up.

STACEY: Let’s head out.

Stacey, Krista and Kinsley grab their weapons and bags before heading out of the cabin. Danielle gets up and looks around the cabin.

DANIELLE: Let’s focus on the living room windows first.

——Cut To——

Kinsley, Krista and Stacey walk through the forest keeping careful attention to their surroundings. The wind blows rustling the leaves and sunlight peeks through the trees.

KRISTA: I think I see another cabin just ahead.

The trio makes their way to the secluded cabin taking note of the overgrown grass, broken windows and torn apart porch.

KINSLEY: Someone’s already been here. Maybe we should turn back.
STACEY: We need to see if they left anything behind worth taking.
KRISTA: In and out. It’ll be ok.

Kinsley looks on with nervousness on her face as they make their way closer to the cabin.

——Cut To——

As Danielle hammers a wooden board across a window, Kevin looks around the cabin appearing restless.

DANIELLE: That should do for now.
KEVIN: I’m going to take a walk.
DANIELLE: We aren’t done yet.
KEVIN: I just need a break.
DANIELLE: We just barely started.
KEVIN: Look, I’m 18. I don’t need a babysitter.

Danielle smirks and shakes her head.

DANIELLE: Listen I’m no one’s babysitter. But we need to secure this place.

Kevin rolls his eyes and turns to look out the kitchen window.

——Cut To——

The ladies make their way up the rickety steps of the porch. Stacey and Krista share a look and a nod before Stacey opens the door. Entering, the cabin is dark with a rotten smell. On the floor lies the bodies of a family of four. Blood and body parts scattered about the center of the room.

KRISTA: Oh God.
STACEY: Come on.

Stacey nods to the kitchen and the trio make their way over by sidestepping the bodies.

BOOM!

The ladies look back at the door they entered the cabin with slams shut.

STACEY: Damn wind.

She turns back to the kitchen and they proceed to rummage through the cabinets.

——Cut To——

Danielle finishes hammering another board to a window and looks over at Kevin, who is still staring out the kitchen window.

DANIELLE: What’s up?
KEVIN: I…I think I saw something move. Near the trees.

Danielle walks over and looks out.

DANIELLE: I don’t see anything.
KEVIN: I know what I saw. I’m going to go check it out.

As he starts to head for the back door of the cabin, Danielle grabs his arm.

DANIELLE: Hang on. You stay here. I’ll go check it out.
KEVIN: I can do it.
DANIELLE: Stay here.

Danielle gives him a stern look before grabbing her knife and heading out the back door. Kevin walks over to the wall and hits it with his fist out of frustration.

CLICK

He jumps back, startled, as the wall he just hit moves slightly inward.

——Cut To——

Kinsley adds two cans to her bag and looks over at Krista and Stacey who are still rummaging through the cabinets.

KINSLEY: I think that’s all. We should go.
STACEY: Hold up. I want to check out the bedrooms.
KINSLEY: But…what if those things are back there.
STACEY: Just stay here. I’ll go check it out.
KRISTA: I’ll go with you.

The two women raise their guns and make their way out of the kitchen and towards the bedrooms. Kinsley looks around nervously

——Cut To——

Kevin looks around before pushing the wall in further revealing a walkway between the walls. Pulling out his flashlight he shines it down the enclosed hall. A glimmer of something shines as the light hits it. He begins to make his way slowly down the hall between the walls.

——Cut To——

Stacey and Krista enter the master bedroom and scan the room. Furniture is scattered about and broken.

KRISTA: Looks like a tornado went through here.
STACEY: I’ll check the bathroom. You check the stuff in here.

Krista nods and walks over to the bookshelf in the corner while Stacey heads to the bathroom. Turning her attention to the closet door right next to it, she goes to open it.

KINSLEY: Ahhhh!

Stacey runs out of the bathroom, gun drawn and the two women rush out the room towards the screams.

——Cut To——

Inching little by little down the hall, Kevin gets a whiff of the smell of a decaying body. The low moans of the undead stop him dead in his tracks. Using the flashlight he scans the light down the hall and slowly up. Just then, he starts to shake, drops the flashlight and runs back down the hall.

The sounds of the undead screeching echoes among the walls in the tight space as three zombies chase after Kevin.

KEVIN: Help! Help!

Kevin runs faster as the light from walled door gets closer until he trips and falls flat on his stomach. He quickly tries to get up, but a grabs his ankle pulls him back down.

KEVIN: Noooo!!

——Cut To——

BANG!

The gunshot rings around the disheveled cabin and zombie brains splatter all over Kinsley, who is standing with her back against the kitchen counter shaking.

KRISTA: Are you ok? Did it scratch you?
KINSLEY: N-n-no. It ju-just got up and started coming towards me. I-I didn’t…I couldn’t…

She trails off and starts to sob. Krista walks over and brings her into an embrace as she looks over at Stacey, who looks on with slight sympathy.

STACEY: We should get back.

——Cut To——

KEVIN: Ahhhh!

BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG!

After a series of shots, Kevin is able to free his leg from the grasp of the zombie and scrambles to his feet - keeping his eyes fixated on the now dead creatures that were after him. Turning around he sees Danielle with a gun in hand, looking angry.

DANIELLE: What the actual fuck were you doing!?
KEVIN: I just found this secret entrance.
DANIELLE: And so you just went in to take a look unarmed?
KEVIN: I didn’t exactly plan to be nearly killed.
DANIELLE: That’s just it! You didn’t plan! You never plan!
KEVIN: It worked out though.
DANIELLE: This time, but what about next time if no one else is around!?
KEVIN: I could have handled it!
DANIELLE: Bullshit! You were about to become one of them!
KEVIN: You know what, fuck you!
STACEY: Hey! What the hell is going on?

Danielle and Kevin look towards the front entrance as the other three enter.

DANIELLE: Ask him.

Danielle storms off towards the back of the cabin and slams the door behind her. Kevin faces the trio.

KEVIN: I found this secret passage/storage hallway thing between the walls.

Stacey walks over and takes a look inside at the three bodies piled on top of each other. She looks at Kevin.

STACEY: Did they scratch or bite you?
KEVIN: No. She shot them before they had a chance.

Stacey shakes her head and walks off. Kevin looks on with a sense of guilt.

:::::SCENE 3:::::

Meredith wakes up to the sound of movement downstairs. She sits up, turns to the edge of the bed and slowly rises. Looking down at the table next to the bed is a set of new clothes nearly folded.

KNOCK, KNOCK

Reina peeks in with a smile.

REINA: Good afternoon. I figured you’d want a change of clothes.
MEREDITH: Thank you. You didn’t have to do that.
REINA: Well thank Mila. She’s the one who luckily still has all her belongings.
MEREDITH: With everything that happened yesterday, I didn’t get your story.
REINA: My story?
MEREDITH: How you ended up here.

Reina’s smile fades and she looks down.

MEREDITH: You don’t have to.
REINA: No, it’s ok.

Reina makes her way into the room and sits down on the edge of the bed. Meredith sits next to her, looking on with intrigue.

REINA: Before all of this, I was a nurse. Married to my wonderful husband. Expecting our first child. Then the hospital was attacked. People running everywhere. Zombies slashing about from room to room. Getting out was not easy and I almost didn't make it, but Braxton and Jeremy’s wife - Kayla - helped get me out.

Reina looks away as tears well in her eyes.

MEREDITH: What happened to your husband? Jeremy’s wife?
REINA: As the three of us were making our way beyond the hospital, she was bitten. One minute she’s running with us and the next I see her on the ground screaming, covered in her own blood. It’s something I never will be able to shake from my mind. She was my friend and I couldn’t do anything. I’m a nurse. I help save lives…but I couldn’t save her or my husband.

After a few moments of silence, Reina looks at Meredith.

REINA: Braxton and I made it to my home, but my husband wasn’t anywhere to be found. I insisted on waiting, so Braxton left to find his fiancé. All night I waited, but he never came. Braxton returned and the two of us decided it was best to leave. Those things were all about and my home was no longer the safe haven it once was. As we were leaving, I saw my husband. He had turned. He didn’t see me, but I saw him. I knew it would be the last time I ever saw him.

Meredith reaches out and grabs Reina’s hands.

MEREDITH: I’m sorry for your loss.
REINA: Hector was a good man. The best. I just wish I had gotten to him sooner, you know?
MEREDITH: Just hold on to the good memories. That’s the only thing that keeps me going.
REINA: I’ll always have him in my heart and now, a piece of him forever with me.

She rubs her pregnant belly and smiles. Meredith smiles back, but those smiles quickly fade as the power in mansion goes out.

——Cut To——

With all nine survivors gathered in the living room, Trent stands in the middle of the room as the others look to him for answers.

TRENT: The generator has stopped working. There’s no way to fix it at this point.
MILA: There has to be something we can do.
TRENT: I would say open the windows, but that’s not exactly a safe option as of a month ago.
JEREMY: Looks like we all better get used to the heat.
KALISTA: It’s the start of summer! This is only going to get worse!
BRAXTON: Better to be hot and alive than cold and dead.
KALISTA: I can’t stand the heat.
DECLAN: And I can’t stand you bitching all the time.

Kalista turns to face Declan with anger in her eyes.

KALISTA: Excuse me?
DECLAN: All you do is complain about this and complain about that.
KALISTA: I didn’t ask for this!
DECLAN: None of us did!
TRENT: Let’s settle down here.
KALISTA: Fuck you!
BRAXTON: Kalista, that’s enough!

As the arguing continues, Jude notices movement from outside. He walks towards the window and looks out. Instantly, fear washes over his face as his eyes widen.

JUDE: Guys. Guys!

A silence falls over the room as they look towards Jude.

JUDE: You need to see this.

The group moves towards the windows and spots a group of zombies clamoring against the front gate trying to get into the property.

:::::SCENE 4:::::

Miles and Sage, looking exhausted and sweating, make their way to the porch of a house. Miles sits on one of the two chairs and places his feet up on the porch railing. Sage sits in the chair next to him and looks around the deserted street.

MILES: Damn this heat, man.
SAGE: Yeah.
MILES: What’s up?
SAGE: Nothing.
MILES: You’ve been quiet all night. Are you still thinking about those old folks?
SAGE: We left them to die.
MILES: Better them than us.

Sage shakes his head and scoffs. Miles sits up and looks squarely at Sage.

MILES: That guy had his guy seconds away from blowing your brains out.
SAGE: He was just scared.
MILES: Look, man. I’ve seen things. Before and after this shit.
SAGE: So have I.
MILES: Then you should know fucking well that this is survival of the quickest.

Sage stands up and walks down the porch steps.

MILES: Where are you going?

Sage stops and turns to Miles.

SAGE: I get we come from two different places. We handle things differently. You’ve seen shit and been through shit. The world is fucked up, but morals don’t have to go down the drain. People are scared. I’m scared and deep down so are you. But that doesn’t give you or me the right to do whatever the fuck we want. We could have helped them. Things could have been different.

Miles stands up and charges down the steps and gets right up to Sage.

MILES: Yeah, they could have! They could have killed you and me without a second thought. Things are different now and I’m not about to get myself turned into one of those freaks because I did the “moral” thing. You don’t have to like how I handle things, but if you want to keep rolling with me then you better understand that in these streets there are no morals.

Miles backs up and the two look at each other before Sage shakes his head and continues down the road.

MILES: God dammit.

Miles makes his way down the street until he is side by side next to Sage and the two continue on down the street.

:::::SCENE 5:::::

Stopping on the side of the highway, Zale puts down his bag and surveys the area. The sun begins to set and a group of abandoned cars shields the foursome as they sit down.

NATE: We made good progress.
CHANDLER: I’m going to go check some cars. See which one I’m sleeping in.
NATE: I’ll check out some too.

Nate and Chandler get up and walk away in separate directions, looking in the cars. Once out of earshot, Zale gets up and sits closer to Eden.

ZALE: Are you ok?
EDEN: Yeah. I’m sorry about earlier.
ZALE: Nothing to be sorry about.
EDEN: She’s right, though.
ZALE: No, she’s not. She’s just…adjusting. We all are.
EDEN: You don’t have to try and be nice to me.
ZALE: You’re right, I don’t have to try.

He smiles at her and she smiles back.

ZALE: Just don’t let her get to you. We all deal with this in our own way.
EDEN: I’ll do better. You guys have been nice enough to keep me around. I need to do my part.
ZALE: You are. You help keep watch. You cook the food and keep track of our supplies. You keep us alive and from losing ourselves in this mess.

Eden blushes and looks down with a slight smile on her lips. Looking back at Zale, their eyes meet and linger for a moment.

EDEN: Thank you.

Zale smiles before getting up and joining the others rummaging through the cars. Eden stands and looks around. Darkness has fallen and the sounds of crickets echo through the night. Moans of the undead carry along the wind causing Eden to slightly shudder. She looks back down the path they came from, but no movement is in sight. The groans get louder and she frantically looks around to find the direction of the source.

A bit further down, Zale opens a car door and pulls a dead body out of the driver’s seat. Looking inside he rummages through car until he hears distant screams. Quickly getting out of the car he looks back at the others as a group of zombies starts to swarm them.

To Zale’s right, Nate is cornered fighting off a group of zombies and struggling to keep them at bay. Straight ahead, Chandler is standing on top of a minivan as a group of zombies shakes the van. To his left, Eden is inside a car screaming as a group of zombies fight to get to her.

Zale quickly looks around, grabs his knife and makes his way towards the commotion.
