*August 4, 2017*
In the dark of the evening, only a campfire illuminates the clearing in the woods. Trent, head down and tears streaming down his face, is kneeling on the ground. In front of him, Meredith paces back and forth while sobbing and holding a gun to her side.
TRENT: Kill me. Please. Kill me.
She ignores his pleas and continues to pace back and forth. Trent looks up at her with a mixture of sadness and anger on his face.
TRENT: Kill me! Kill me! Kill me!
Meredith stops pacing and turns to face him with full rage. She lifts the gun and puts it to his head.
TRENT: Kill me. Kill me. Kill me…
:::::SCENE 2:::::
————TWO MONTHS EARLIER————
Meredith walks through the woods with her knife at the ready. Behind her, Braxton and Kalista look around taking in the almost serene environment around them. Not too far behind them, Jeremy helps Reina cross over a log on the ground.
REINA: I’m sorry for slowing you down.
JEREMY: Hey, you’re not.
KALISTA: Do you guys see that?
Kalista points up ahead at a mansion just beyond a broken down iron fence. Meredith reaches the fence and looks towards the mansion.
MEREDITH: It might not be safe.
KALISTA: I don’t think we have much of a choice.
Kalista nods back towards Reina who appears exhausted. Jeremy looks towards Meredith with a pleading look. She looks back at the mansion and then towards her new group.
MEREDITH: Alright, but you guys stay here. Braxton and I will make sure it’s safe.
BRAXTON: Sounds like a plan.
Meredith walks over to Jeremy, pulls out a gun from her backpack and hands it to him.
MEREDITH: Only use it if you have to. The sound attracts them. Keep her safe.
JEREMY: I will. I promise.
Jeremy takes the gun and puts it in the back of his jeans. He walks Reina over to the bricked part of the fence and helps her sit down. Braxton walks over to Kalista.
BRAXTON: You help keep a look out.
KALISTA: Do I have a choice.
BRAXTON: I get this isn’t ideal…
KALISTA: Did you do it?
BRAXTON: No.
KALISTA: Then I guess we have to make this work.
Braxton nods and turns to Meredith.
BRAXTON: Let’s go.
——Cut To——
Braxton and Meredith look around as they make their way towards the mansion. For the most part, the mansion seems relatively untouched. Meredith opens the front door and the two make their way into the dark foyer.
——Cut To——
Outside, Reina sits wiping sweat from her face as Jeremy stands to keep an eye out on the woods. Kalista looks around and notices movement not too far from where she stands. Jumping back, she begins to hear the growing sound of a zombie snarling.
——Cut To——
Braxton walks from the back of the mansion towards the foyer and looks up to the second floor. Meredith walks over to the railing and looks down at him.
MEREDITH: Upstairs is clear.
BRAXTON: Downstairs is clear.
MEREDITH: Let’s go get the others.
——Cut To——
Kalista walks backward, keeping an eye on the woods. Her body begins to shake once the zombie comes into view.
KALISTA: Oh my god!
She falls backward and lands on her ass, causing Jeremy and Reina to look towards her. The zombie snarls louder as it fixates on Kalista, who is struggling to get up.
KALISTA: Help! Help!
——Cut To——
Hearing the screams, Braxton and Meredith dash out of the mansion and towards the others. Once they reach the broken down iron fence, they see the zombie is on the ground with a knife sticking out of its head. Jeremy reaches down and pulls it out.
BRAXTON: We heard screaming, are you all ok?
KALISTA: That…that thing just came at me!
BRAXTON: Was it just one?
JEREMY: Yeah, it’s the only one I’ve seen.
KALISTA: Took you long enough to kill it! I was almost dead!
JEREMY: I didn’t see it until you started screaming.
MEREDITH: Hey, it’s done. Let’s get inside before you attract more of them.
Jeremy and Braxton help Reina to her feet and the five survivors make their way towards the deserted mansion.
:::::SCENE 3:::::
Jude sits in a chair in the living room of Mila’s mansion looking down at his feet. He looks up and his face reddens with anger.
JUDE: How could you let them leave!?
Trent wheels around, glaring at his son.
TRENT: They were trying to sabotage our survival!
JUDE: No they weren’t! You know they weren’t!
TRENT: That’s enough, Jude!
JUDE: No! You made them leave and now they could all die!
DECLAN: Better them than us, kid.
Declan puts his drink down and heads towards the stairs. Mila looks at Trent with a sympathetic smile.
MILA: I’ll let you two talk.
She follows Declan up the stairs. Once alone, Trent walks over to Jude and kneels down to be at his level. He lowers his voice into an almost growl.
TRENT: If you talk out of turn one more time…
JUDE: What? You’ll exile me too? Feed me to those things?
TRENT: I wouldn’t want to find out if I were you.
Glaring at him, Trent stands up and walks towards the stairs.
TRENT: It’s time you grew up and started acting like a man. You’re on watch duty tonight.
Trent ascends the stairs, leaving Jude alone in the living room with only his thoughts and resentment.
——Cut To——
Upstairs in Mila’s room, Declan sits on her bed with his shirt unbuttoned. She walks over to the door and prepares to close it when she sees Trent coming up.
MILA: Everything ok?
TRENT: Yeah. Kids, you know.
Mila nods and looks back at Declan, who gives her a hand motion to close the door. She gives a smirk and turns back towards the door.
MILA: Hey, why don’t you come in?
Declan’s eyes widen in protest, but he quickly composes himself as Trent enters the room. Mila locks the door and turns to face the men.
MILA: Sit down.
Trent looks at her with a suspicious look and then glances at Declan.
MILA: Over there. On the bed.
Trent walks towards the bed and sits down next to Declan. Both men have uneasy looks on their faces before turning their attention towards Mila. She smirks as she walks slowly towards them, stopping just a few feet in front of them. While keeping her eyes on the men, she slowly begins to unbutton her shirt and drops it to the floor.
Trent and Declan look on with uncertainty and intrigue as she continues to lose her clothing until she is completely naked. She licks her lips and walks towards Declan. She pulls off his button down shirt and then turns to Trent.
MILA: Take it off.
Nodding, he lifts his shirt off allowing her to see his muscular build. She gently brings Declan’s mouth to her breast as she leans over and passionately kisses Trent. Declan’s hands run over her naked body as Trent gets up and stands behind her - kissing his way down her neck and back. The trio proceeds to let their desires take hold, allowing for a small escape from the world around them.
——Cut To——
Downstairs, Jude walks over to the tray of alcohol and looks at it with intrigue. He hesitantly reaches over and pours himself a glass. Smelling it first, he slowly takes a sip. His face winces as the burn of the alcohol lingers in his throat.
TRENT (in Jude’s mind): “It’s time you grew up and started acting like a man”
Anger rushes over Jude’s body as he pours more alcohol into the glass and downs it in one gulp.
:::::SCENE 4:::::
————PRESENT DAY————
Staring out at a deserted suburban street, with houses and cars lined down the road, Krista and Danielle share an exhausted smile.
DANIELLE: We finally made it past the city.
KRISTA: Only took two damn months.
DANIELLE: How the fuck did we survive that?
The two women laugh until they hear a rustle coming from the woods just behind them. They turn and quickly draw their guns. Moments later, two figures emerge from the woods. Krista and Danielle look at each other with shocked expressions.
WOMAN: Looks like we meet again.
Danielle and Krista look back at the two people before them as the reality that they are seeing Stacey and Kevin again sets in. The foursome smile and laugh.
:::::SCENE 5:::::
————TWO MONTHS EARLIER————
Walking down the highway, Krista and Danielle keep watch of their surroundings. Just ahead of them, they take in the sight of several zombies dead and piled up.
KRISTA: Looks like a mass murder.
DANIELLE: Must be an experienced group of survivors. There are at least 30 of those things.
KRISTA: Seems to have just happened not too long ago.
DANIELLE: Everyone’s headed for the city too it seems.
The women get closer to the piles of bodies and stop to take in the site. Danielle looks over to the side and notices a backpack. She walks over and opens it up to find a few supplies.
DANIELLE: Must have been an ambush. They left a bag.
KRISTA: What’s in it?
DANIELLE: Some food, a water bottle, a flashlight and some other stuff.
KRISTA: We'll take it with us.
DANIELLE: Already ahead of you.
Danielle puts the backpack on her back as she peels open a granola bar and takes a bite. She hands it to Krista.
DANIELLE: It’s food I suppose.
Krista takes a bite and almost gags at the awful taste.
KRISTA: That’s just straight up nasty.
DANIELLE: No one said it would taste great.
They continue to walk down the highway sharing the bar and leaving the piles of zombie bodies behind.
:::::SCENE 6:::::
In the woods, Stacey and Kevin continue their trek towards the highway. Stacey looks over at Kevin, who is silently walking beside her.
STACEY: I’m sorry you had to see that.
KEVIN: We should have helped her.
STACEY: There was nothing we could do. She was already gone.
KEVIN: It’s my fault. We were gone because I needed training.
STACEY: Hey, it is not your fault.
She stops and pulls Kevin back, making him face her.
STACEY: I know it’s upsetting, but that sort of thing is going to happen. You can’t avoid it and sometimes you won’t be able to help it. It’s not your fault. It’s no one's fault. Kinsley was a wonderful person and will be missed. But at the end of the day, my only purpose is keeping you alive and safe. I will not apologize for that, ever. Now come on, we can still catch up with Krista and Danielle.
The Richards siblings continue to make their way towards the highway until they stop, listening to the movement from up ahead.
KEVIN: What’s that?
Stacey looks deeper into the woods ahead and soon a large group of zombies comes into view. Her eyes widen and she turns to Kevin.
STACEY: Run!
She pushes him to his right, motivating him to run north through the woods. Realizing that she has no chance at defeating the large zombie horde alone, she races after Kevin until they are running side by side.
KEVIN: What about the highway!?
STACEY: We’ll have to find another way! Don’t stop running! Don't stop for anything!
The two continue to run north through the woods that is parallel to the highway.
::::::SCENE 7:::::::
————PRESENT DAY————
In the suburbs, Sage is upstairs inside the house where he has been held prisoner. Hiding in the closet, he looks through the small crack he left open. Inside the room, there is a dirty mattress on the floor. Sage struggles to control his breath as sweat pours down his face.
CREAK!
The bedroom door opens and Ramon pushes Tessa inside before following her in. He locks the door and shows her his sinister smile.
RAMON: I’ve missed you.
TESSA: You’re going to die. I promise you that.
RAMON: Oh, how I love a good promise. You know, I will make you a promise too.
He rushes forward and grabs the back of her neck, causing her to wince in pain and look up at him.
RAMON: I promise you that tonight, you will wish you were the one dying.
He releases her neck and slaps her hard across the face, causing Sage to clutch his fist in anger. He shoves Tessa down on the bed and proceeds to pin her down. As she struggles under him Sage slowly and quietly opens the closet door.
RAMON: You love that promise don’t you. You love it!
She continues to struggle as he slaps her hard in the face again, causing her to turn her head to one side.
RAMON: Did that hurt? Here let me make it better.
He leans down and slowly licks her red cheek. As he goes to lick it again, Sage charges forward and wraps a belt around Ramon’s neck, pulling him off of Tessa. Ramon struggles to breathe and pull the belt away, but Sage pulls tighter.
SAGE: Run! Get out of here!
Tessa scrambles to her feet and runs for the doors, but Ramon stretches out his leg causing her to trip and hit her head on the nearby dresser - knocking her out cold. Sage loosens his grip in the commotion and Ramon takes the moment of weakness to move his head back against Sage’s. He breaks free of the belt as Sage winces in pain and blood streams out of his nose.
Ramon pulls out his knife from his pants and points it at Sage.
RAMON: Ballsy move, kid. But not enough.
Ramon charges towards Sage with the knife.
:::::SCENE 8:::::
————TWO MONTHS AGO————
William and Rodney look on as Ramon continues to point his gun at Sage and Miles. Miles clutches his shoulder as blood begins to make a visible stain on his t-shirt.
RAMON: Back to their cell!
Rodney and William grab Sage and Miles and roughly lead them to the shed. After tossing them inside, the shed locks and Miles winces in pain.
ZELMA: What happened? We heard the gunshot.
SAGE: That guy, Ramon, shot Miles in the shoulder.
MILES: Fuck!
ZELMA: Hey, watch your mouth. Chance, hold the lantern up. Tessa, come help me.
Tessa moves towards Miles and nudges Sage.
TESSA: Move.
Sage moves over and watches as Zelma and Tessa remove Miles’ shirt. Blood continues to come out of his shoulder wound.
ZELMA: Help me turn him.
Zelma, Tessa and Sage turn Miles on his side as he continues to fight against the pain.
ZELMA: Straight through. Alright, put him on his back. Tessa, get that first aid kit from in the corner.
Tessa rushes over to the corner of the shed and digs her hand into a hidden spot until she retrieves the first aid kit. She hands it off to Zelma, who quickly opens it.
SAGE: Is he going to make it? Do you know what you’re doing?
CHANCE: Hey, let her work. She’s his only hope right now.
Sage watches as Zelma gets to work on stopping the bleeding.
ZELMA: I have no sedative for you, so you’re just going to have to suck it up for a bit.
As she proceeds to touch the wound, Miles looks up at the shed ceiling until he passes out.
:::::SCENE 9:::::
————PRESENT DAY————
Entering a convenience store, Zale takes a look around before ushering Chandler and Nate inside. Closing the door behind him, he bars it shut with a piece of wood. Nate roams the aisles with his knife at the ready. Chandler walks over littered trash, making her way to the restrooms. Zale proceeds to check the aisles for any movement.
NATE: This side is clear.
ZALE: Over here is clear too.
CHANDLER: Restrooms are clear.
NATE: What about that back room?
Nate nods towards a closed door at the end of the hall, adjacent to the bathrooms. Zale walks towards it, raises his knife and quickly opens the door.
CHANDLER: Well? See anything?
Zale’s knife drops to the ground.
NATE: Hey, what is it?
Nate and Chandler rush to Zale’s side and look into the office. Standing in front of them with a gun raised is a girl wearing a hoodie.
ZALE: Eden?
Eden removes her hoodie, revealing her face clearly, and lowers her gun.
ZALE: But…how?
Eden looks towards Chandler, who looks back with slight fear in her eyes. Eden tilts her head slightly and smirks.
EDEN: Seems as though luck is on my side.
