:::::SCENE 1:::::

*June 4, 2017*

Laying on the ground just inside an empty office in an abandoned skyscraper, Eden slowly regains consciousness as she hears the increasingly loud snarling of zombies. Feeling a hand around her ankle, she instinctively pulls her leg back hard - escaping the grip - and sits up quickly. Fear washes over her body as she sees a horde of zombies making their way towards her.

Fumbling to her feet, Eden begins to cry as she walks backward - staring at the hungry herd in front of her. Backed into the large ceiling to floor window, Eden rapidly scans to the room for a means to escape. There is none.

With zombies just feet away from consuming her flesh, she closes her eyes and prepares to be eaten alive. Thoughts of her life before the outbreak, everything she’s endured and her final moments with Zale flood her mind as she tries to mentally escape the dead around her.

BANG! BANG! BANG!

Eden opens her eyes and sees zombies, inches from her, falling to the ground with gunshots to the head.

BANG! BANG!

MAN: Hey, close and lock that door! Hurry up!

Eden looks up in the ceiling, where a few titles are missing, and sees a figure firing his gun at the zombies. Snapping out of her trance, she rushes to the door, kicks a dead zombie out of the way and slams the door shut. Locking it and turns around and looks at the dead zombies on the ground.

Just then, the figure in the ceiling jumps down onto the desk and looks at her.

MAN: This floor is covered with those biters. The only way out is through there.

He gestures at the giant window and Eden’s eyes widen with fear.

EDEN: What do you mean?
MAN: I mean this.

He turns around and fires his gun at the window multiple times until it finally breaks. The man hops down and walks over to the now shattered window. Looking down he sees an open dumpster just below. Turning to Eden, he extends his hand.

MAN: Come on, princess, we don't have all day.

Eden closes her eyes, listening to the snarling and clawing on the other side of the door. The man lets out an aggravated sigh and walks over to her. She opens her eyes just as he picks her up - bridal style - and walks towards the window.

EDEN: Hey! Put me down!
MAN: I did not waste all those bullets to leave you to die, alright.
EDEN: But…
MAN: 3!
EDEN: Stop!
MAN: 2!
EDEN: No!
MAN: 1!

Eden closes her eyes and clings to the man as he jumps right was the zombies break through the office door.

THUD!

Eden and the man land on top of garbage bags in the dumpster. She slowly moves off of him as zombies fall from the window straight to the ground - smashing their heads against the pavement.

The man slowly makes his way to the edge of the dumpster and climbs out. He reaches over and helps Eden out of the dumpster.

MAN: You’re welcome, by the way.
EDEN: Why did you do that?
MAN: Do what? Save you from death? What can I say, sometimes I’m a nice guy?
EDEN: What’s your name?

The man extends his hand with a smile.

TODD: Todd Cline.

She hesitates before shaking his hand.

EDEN: Eden Tran.
TODD: Well, princess, let’s get the hell out of here.

He nods towards the zombies heading towards them from down the street before running in the other direction. She watches him take off and looks back at the dumpster and then the approaching zombies. She closes her eyes, takes a deep breath and runs after Todd.

:::::SCENE 2:::::

Rushing into an abandoned building, Nate bars the lobby doors as Chandler and Zale finish killing three zombies. Once the last zombie falls, the trio collapse on the ground out of breath. With his knees up to his chest, Zale begins to sob. Chandler turns away from him and rolls her eyes. Nate scoots over to Zale and rubs his back.

NATE: She will be missed.
ZALE: I should have saved her.
NATE: There was nothing more to do. We were surrounded.

Zale looks over at Chandler with anger in his eyes. He gets up and walks towards her.

ZALE: Why didn’t you save her!
CHANDLER: It was already too late. She didn’t stand a chance.

He turns around out of frustration.

CHANDLER: I know you hate to hear it, but she was weak. She didn’t have what it took to…
NATE: That’s enough!

Chandler goes silent at Nate raising his voice and breaking from his usually calm demeanor.

NATE: Eden was with us since the start of all of this. She was brave and deserves respect, even in death.

He turns to look at Zale who is crouched down against a wall before turning his eyes back to Chandler.

NATE: We need to stick together and plan our next move. I’m going to check the rest of this floor. Chandler, check our bags and sort our supplies. Zale…just takes a break. We will regroup later.

Nate drops his bag, picks up his gun and heads off to search the first floor. Chandler lets out and sigh and begins to dump everything out of their bags. Zale watches her with intensity.

:::::SCENE 3:::::

Inside the abandoned mansion, Meredith sits in a chair facing the lit fireplace - watching the flames dance to the silence of the room. Braxton stands with his gun in hand looking out the window as night falls. Jeremy and Reina sit on the couch taking in the quiet as Kalista files her nails in the chair across from Meredith.

REINA: It’s great you found this place, Kalista.
KALISTA: I was hoping there would be air conditioning, water, electricity but fuck no.
JEREMY: It’s still a shelter.
KALISTA: It’s still no better than being out there.
BRAXTON: It is actually. Here you have walls and protection.
KALISTA: Whatever.

Meredith sits silent and continues to watch the fire. Kalista looks at her and chuckles.

KALISTA: I still can’t figure out your angle.
MEREDITH: My angle?
KALISTA: What’s in this for you? Why leave with us? Not like you know us.
MEREDITH: I’ve lived out there the longest.
KALISTA: So you’re like our savior or some shit?
BRAXTON: Kalista.
KALISTA: What!? I’m not allowed to speak my mind!?
BRAXTON: You can, but you don’t have to be so damn confrontational.
KALISTA: Fuck you!
MEREDITH: No, fuck you!

The room goes quiet as the attention turns to Meredith who glares at Kalista.

MEREDITH: You’re right, I don’t know you but I do know that without me you would be dead. Your self-righteousness is finished here. If you want to be in this group you will treat everyone with respect. This isn’t Kalista’s world, this is their world - those walkers. You live in their world and by their rules now. You have no say. You have no complaints. Period. Now if you would like to object to that you’re more than welcome to outside these walls. I will not allow you to get any one of us killed because you can’t look after anyone but yourself. Clear?

Kalista looks at Meredith with disgust before going back to filing her nails. Meredith gets up and walks towards the front door. Braxton follows her outside and the two sit on the front steps.

BRAXTON: I’m sorry about her. She’s had that fiery personality ever since I’ve known her.
MEREDITH: I don’t usually snap.
BRAXTON: It’s this new world. Makes us react in odd ways from our usual way of life.
MEREDITH: I know you didn’t sabotage the group.
BRAXTON: You believe me?
MEREDITH: Always did. Trent was hiding something.
BRAXTON: You caught on to that too.
MEREDITH: Honestly, I don’t care what his reasons were. Getting away from him…feels safer.

Braxton looks at Meredith intrigued by her last comment as she stares out at the broken front gate.

MEREDITH: Tomorrow, we need to fix that.
BRAXTON: At first light.

:::::SCENE 4:::::

Sitting in the dark shed, with just the light from the lantern, Sage looks on as Miles lays on the ground resting.

ZELMA: He will make it.
SAGE: I know.
CHANCE: How long have you been with him?
SAGE: Since the beginning.
CHANCE: Are you two…?
SAGE: What?
TESSA: Boyfriends. He’s trying to say, boyfriends.
SAGE: Oh, no. We’re straight.

After an awkward moment of silence, Zelma clears her throat.

CHANCE: I’m sorry for asking. I was just curious.
SAGE: It’s cool. So, how did you all end up here?
CHANCE: Back when the outbreak started, I was alone. My family died a few days.
SAGE: Same here.
CHANCE: I was going to kill myself. But not because of them dying.
SAGE: Why?
CHANCE: My family was conservative. They tried to love me, but…couldn’t. When I found them, dead, I just thought it was punishment for my sexuality. As if God was forcing me to be even more alone than I was already feeling.

He holds back tears as Zelma reaches over and holds his hand.

ZELMA: But, God had other plans. He sent this young, brilliant man my way just in time.
CHANCE: I heard her screaming. I almost didn’t go, but…
ZELMA: But he did. He was brave and he saved me. He protected me.
CHANCE: Tried to until we ended up here. I knew I shouldn’t have believed the note.
ZELMA: But, either way, we have managed to survive this long.

Sage looks over at Maddie, who silently wipes away tears. Tessa catches him staring.

TESSA: I found Maddie under a table inside a restaurant a few days after the outbreak.
MADDIE: I couldn’t move. Some guys stole my wheelchair.
TESSA: But we got it back.
SAGE: How?
TESSA: It doesn’t matter.
MADDIE: We barely made it here so when we saw the note it was a sign of hope.
TESSA: That ended up being one big nightmare.

The silence continues as Miles begins to wake up.

SAGE: Hey.
MILES: Thought I was on my way out.
SAGE: They saved you.
MILES: Thanks. Hurts like a bitch though.
ZELMA: I’ll let that one slide given your situation.
MILES: Cool. What now?
TESSA: The best you can hope for is your two months sentence ends soon.

The six prisoners sit in the quiet reflecting on the predicament they are in.

:::::SCENE 5:::::

Sitting in an abandoned car on the highway, Danielle and Krista pass a can of beans back and forth while looking out at the city ahead.

DANIELLE: Should only be a few days walk.
KRISTA: Then who knows what we will run into.
DANIELLE: It’s a big city.
KRISTA: Full of walkers.

As if on cue, a zombie snarls hungrily while walking towards the car. Its face bangs against the passenger window, trying to reach the women. Through an open space at the top of the window, Danielle sticks her knife out and into the zombies head. It falls to the ground as she wipes off the blade.

KRISTA: Just outside the city there is a suburb. That’s where my parents live…lived.
DANIELLE: You don’t think they’re still alive?
KRISTA: I can’t imagine it. I’d like to, but would just be false hope.
DANIELLE: How do you know your sister and fiancé are still alive?
KRISTA: I don’t. But, Braxton is built for survival. My sister…she isn’t made for this.
DANIELLE: Who is, if we’re being honest.
KRISTA: But, she has this strong spirit. I know she will do what it takes to survive.

Danielle nods her head and takes a sip of water.

KRISTA: You don’t think anyone you know…
DANIELLE: No. My grandparents didn’t make it.
KRISTA: I’m sorry.
DANIELLE: When my abuelo gave me his shop, I was so excited. I taught that it would someday be something I passed on. But, all those dreams. They’re gone now. No point on dwelling on it.

The women sit in silence and towards the city ahead.

:::::SCENE 6:::::
Walking in the woods, Stacey looks ahead as Kevin turns to look behind them.

KEVIN: I think we out ran them.
STACEY: Keep your guard up.

As they head deeper into the woods, they spot a barn just ahead. Stacey walks forward, gun drawn and approaches the doors. Listening, she hears the crackling of a fire inside. Motioning for Kevin to stay back, she pulls open the door slightly and peeks inside.

By the fire sits a man with an oddly shaped mustache. The man turns, hearing the creaking of the door.

MAN: You can come in. I won’t bite. Well, only if I turn.

Stacey looks back at Kevin with uncertainty before pulling the door open wider. The siblings walk into the barn and watch the man poke at the fire with a stick.

MAN: Close the door.

Stacey closes the barn door and keeps her finger near her gun’s trigger.

MAN: If you’re here to steal my supplies, I’m happy to tell you you’re shit out of luck.
STACEY: Who are you?
BARRET: Name’s Barret Libonette. You might recognize it from the news.
KEVIN: Why’s that?

The man turns to face them with a wicked grin on his face.

BARRET: Murdering eight people and eating the flesh from their bones.

Kevin’s eyes widen as the man laughs and Stacey raises her gun at him.

BARRET: I kid, I kid. Hard to find anyone with a sense of humor nowadays.
STACEY: I wouldn’t call that humor.
BARRET: Honestly, I could tell you I’m a milk man or a senator. Either way, you’d never really know.

Stacey steps closer with her gun drawn and the man raises his hands.

BARRET: Alright I’ll tell you the truth. I’m a professional car racer.
STACEY: I’m sure.
BARRET: Find my car and I’ll gladly demonstrate.
STACEY: No thanks.
BARRET: Suit yourself.

Barret turns back to the fire and starts to stroke his facial hair.

KEVIN (whisper): He’s not going to do anything.
STACEY (whisper): You’re right. We’re leaving.
KEVIN: No.
STACEY: Kevin.
KEVIN: We need to rest. I’m not leaving.
BARRET: There’s plenty of barn for everyone.
STACEY: We’re not staying.

She turns to head for the door. As she opens it, Stacey looks back to see Kevin has moved to sit near the fire.

KEVIN: I’m not going.
STACEY: Kevin. Get. Up.
KEVIN: I’m no child. If you want to go, then leave.
STACEY: We’re staying together.
KEVIN: Then, pop a squat, sis.
BARRET: Yeah, pop a squat.

Barret chuckles and pats the ground next to him. Stacey looks at Kevin who turns his attention to the fire. Stacey, clearly angered storms over to Kevin and grabs him by the arm to pull him up.

STACEY: We’re leaving. Now.

Kevin struggles to get free of Stacey’s grip and pushes her. She stumbles backward and falls to the ground - hitting her head. As she lays unconscious, Kevin rushes to her side.

KEVIN: Oh my god, Stacey. I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean to.

Just then a group of zombies pours through the opened barn doors. Kevin looks up, frightened as they get closer. Barret stands up, grabs his bag and runs towards the back barn door.

BARRET: Good luck, kid!

As Barret leaves, Kevin stands up and looks around the barn. Quickly, he pulls out the gun Stacey gave him and starts shooting at the zombies.

BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG!

After a few missed shots, Kevin is finally able to kill all the zombies as his aim improved. He rushes to the barn’s front doors and closes them shut. Once he finished closing the back barn doors, Stacey begins to stir.

Kevin runs to her side as she regains consciousness. Tears fall down his cheeks as she looks up at him.

KEVIN: I’m so sorry. I’m so, so sorry.

Stacey slowly sits up and looks around at the dead zombies.

STACEY: Did you…?
KEVIN: He ran and I didn’t know what to do. I wasted the bullets. I’m sorry. I just…

Stacey pulls Kevin into a tight hug.

STACEY: You saved me.
KEVIN: I’m so sorry.
STACEY: Shhh. It’s ok.

She moves him back and looks him face to face.

STACEY: What you did, was brave. What you did before that, was stupid and don’t you ever do it again. I may not have all the answer and I will never be your parent, but you will respect me. Got it?

Kevin nods his head in agreement as she hugs him again. He sobs on her shoulder as she looks into the fire, stone-faced.

::::::SCENE 7:::::::

Continuing to run, Todd and Eden stop right in front of a clothing store. Todd tries the door and it opens with ease. He peeks inside before ushering Eden inside. Once both are safely inside, Todd locks the door and lets out an exhausted breath.

TODD: Damn that was exhausting.

Eden looks around the small store with worry. Todd notices and walks forward, surveying the store. He grabs a nearby hanger and taps it on the glass window making a noise. Snarling can be heard in the distance.

TODD: I’ll take care of that. Stay here…or don’t. I mean, it’s up to you.

She nods in response and he goes to investigate the snarling. Looking around, Eden rubs her arms, feeling the chillness of the evening.

A few minutes later, Todd returns and sits on the ground, wiping sweat from his forehead. Eden watches before slowly sitting down across from him.

TODD: So…what happened back there?
EDEN: I was with my group and…got left behind.
TODD: I saw that girl knock the hell out of you. Mean right hook.
EDEN: Chandler.
TODD: Guessing she wasn’t your biggest fan.
EDEN: She…she thought I was weak.

Eden looks down and fidgets with a hanger as Todd watches her with interest.

TODD: It was a dick move, leaving you for dead like that.
EDEN: I don’t blame her.
TODD: You should.
EDEN: Maybe.

She looks up and the two make eye contact.

EDEN: What about you?
TODD: What about me?
EDEN: Why were you there?
TODD: I was in that building for a few days. Was on a run for my community until I got trapped.
EDEN: Community?
TODD: Revco. My dad started it after the outbreak. After he found out my half-brother died.
EDEN: I’m sorry.
TODD: It’s ok.
EDEN: What’s it like?
TODD: It’s nice enough. Water, food, protection. The basic needs of survival. Has about 20 people currently. Me and a small group came to the city for supplies and recruiting. When we got to that building, we got ambushed by walkers and separated. Since then I’ve been working my way floor to floor trying to scavenge what I can. Then I heard the gunfire from the floor below me. I want to check it out and saw your friend hit you. I called out to get you to wake up, but it was no use. To be honest, I almost left you to die thinking you were a lost cause. But you woke and well you know the rest.

Eden takes in a deep breath and exhales while looking down.

EDEN: Thank you.
TODD: Yeah. No problem.

Eden slightly shakes as she feels colder causing Todd to notice. He gets up and walks over to a rack of clothes. Pulling out a red hoodie he tosses it to her.

TODD: Here.
EDEN: I shouldn’t.
TODD: Come on, no one is going to care. Not anymore.

She nods and puts on the hoodie as Todd sits back down.

EDEN: Thanks.
TODD: Hey, um…I’ll keep watch for a few hours. Get some rest.

Eden looks at him hesitantly causing him to turn red.

TODD: Hey, I’m not that kind of guy. You don’t know me, but if you did…I wouldn’t ever…you know.

Eden nods her head, turns her back to Todd, lays down and closes her eyes. He watches her for a moment before looking forward at the store’s door.

:::::SCENE 8:::::

Coming in from the back door of the mansion, Trent walks confidently towards the living room. Jude sits across from Declan playing chess as Mila looks out the window.

JUDE: I win. Again.
DECLAN: Just wait, kid, I’ll be beating you soon enough.

Jude smirks but quickly loses it as he sees Trent looking at him. Declan turns to Trent and quickly looks away.

TRENT: Jude, let’s go.
JUDE: Where?

Trent turns and heads for the back door causing Jude to get up and follow suit. Mila and Declan exchange and glance.

DECLAN: What’s that about?
MILA: Who knows.

Mila watches the father and son exit with suspicion.

——Cut To——

Outside, in the dark, Trent leads Jude to a shed at the back of Mila’s property. Jude looks around nervously while Trent keeps his focus on the shed.

JUDE: Dad…what are we doing.
TRENT: It’s time you became a man.
JUDE: What do you mean?

As they approach the shed’s door, Trent pulls Jude in front of him by the shoulders.

TRENT: Know that this is for your own good, son.

Trent hands Jude an ax, causing the teen to widen his eyes. The sound of zombies snarling grows louder.

JUDE: Dad…what are you doing?
TRENT: Good luck, champ.

Trent opens the shed door, shoves Jude inside and locks the door. Jude frantically tried to open the door but to no avail.

JUDE: Dad! Dad, let me out! Dad!!!!

The snarling gets louder as Jude’s eyes adjust to the darkness. He turns around and sees five zombies chained to the wall of the shed, struggling to reach him. Jude begins to hyperventilate.

JUDE: D-d-dad, please! Dad!!
TRENT: The only way out of there is by killing them. I’ll wait here all night and day if need be.
JUDE: Dad, please!
TRENT: Enough, victim noises. It’s time you become a man.

Jude tightly holds the ax in his hands as he sees the faces of the zombies.

TRENT: Just know, those chains won’t be able to hold them forever.

Through Jude’s tears, he catches a glimpse of a small window on the side of the shed. He contemplates escaping through it. Just as he’s about to make up his mind, one of the zombies breaks free of its chains and stalks towards Jude with a hunger for his flesh.

Trenttttttttttt omg. This is crazy, I love it as expected.

This might sound cheesy, but I genuinely feel you get better with each episode. I love how you introduced Meredith's husband (it is her husband, right?) as a missing link helping Eden survive.

I won't spoil it BUT Todd and his father might possibly, almost certainly be connected to Meredith ;) Ekatherinna
