Rick's Top 40 Favourite K-Pop songs of 2016 (28-25)

Feb 10, 2017 by ricktworick1
To balance out the worst of list, the best of one is larger so the butthurt goes away!

Notes:
- Feature songs released between Jan 1 2016 to Dec 31 2016 are eligible
- This is based on my personal opinion - I mean there's a reason it's MY LIST. Please do not take any offense from what I think of. Strictly my own thoughts
- Contrary to some weird belief, I don't believe that my music taste is better than anyone else's, although I have no idea if it's useful to post that because every year there are some idiots crying about their favs. This list is for you all to have some fun and laugh at possible comments I make. Yes, I did have a lot of experience in music, going to music school etc., that doesn't make my opinion more valid than anyone else's.

28. Stellar - Sting

As soon as they got rid of the flopping, going-nowhere image of being some space girls and turned themselves into sexy beasts, Stellar's music has improved significantly. From "Marionette" to "Mask" to "Vibrato" (I pretend "Fool" does not exist) to "Sting," they have been consistently releasing music that maintains their fanbase with the possibility of expanding their fandom. This track is what I consider to be what "Mask" was to "Marionette" which means it is not as good as "Vibrato," but still good enough to be on my favourite songs rank. Elements of tropical house are always welcome.

27. Sistar - I Like That

Holy shit, Sistar finally released a summer comeback that doesn't sound like a lazy copy+paste of elements from their previous songs. Not only is that a fresh breath of air stylistically, musically this is also pretty awesome. Of course, the concept of Hyorin and the girls is still pretty apparent, but for once Hyorin decides to tone down a bit with her vocal show-off, maybe trying to insist that Sistar aren't the Korean version of The Pussycat Dolls where Nicole Scherzinger would just take all of the lines. Anyway, this song is their best summer comeback since 2012.

26. Mamamoo - Decalcomanie

This song has Ailee "Don't Touch Me" written all over the whole thing, but the dynamics in this song are slightly better, while the chorus is structured properly so that the beat isn't overdrown with vocal melodies. The rap breakdown, although a bit out of place, is pretty great because it just shows that even with the most awkward song structures to put rap into, they still prove that Moonbyul makes it sound more natural than it should be. It has both the pop and R&B/Soul sound incorporated and it's just pretty damn effective.

25. CL - Lifted

Technically, this song shouldn't even be classified as K-pop, but I just felt the need to include it on a list like that, so here it is. The reggae infusion in this rather typical hip-hop song (which samples Wu-Tang's "Method Man") is what I consider to be one of the biggest guilty pleasures that was released last year. Sure, CL isn't really a great rapper and she may not have been given the best production around, but the song is so damn catchy that at one point I would replay it 20 times in one day. Talk about me being a CL stan (jk, her other releases are horrible).
