RUNWAY: http://prntscr.com/7olz6t

My runway outfit is inspired by two of the most popular fashion patterns from the 1950's: flowers and polka dotted skirts. I also have my iconic fifties glasses and neck tie on me and I am ready to go dancing to one of the biggest dance crazes from the 1950's: the lindyhop

The 1950's had a HUGE timestamp on America's timeline. The music had given the people new voices and a new art the could express themselves with. Film was at the best it had been producing some of the most iconic Movies we still reference today. From Singing in the Rain to movies like Vertigo the 1950's had a very diverse lineup. This is also where the world of Drag made it to the Big screen in 1953 with Ed Wood, starring himself as Glen and Glenda (Glen or Glenda). Just like the Movies, the fashion was also at a new peak with more gag worthy combinations. Patterns had taken control of fashion. Floral, Plaid, and polka dots were the "Bee's Knees" apparently. This Was also the time where the Hourglass figure of a woman was introduced. It was a big deal and woman decided to wear clothing that accentuated the hips giving them the hourglass figure. My look is inspired by the new hourglass figure of the 50's and has a hint of PEARL in it. I wore blue because at this point in time Jazz & Blues were slowly fading away , but i felt they helped shape the music that followed.

The 50's were an  iconic time in terms of fashion. There were many trends established which can even be seen in today's generation. During that time, hair was often set in rollers to give a clean, curly look. In terms of fashion, many women wore belted dresses. They were considered the pinnacle of everyday fashion, with clean and sleek tops and puffy skirts. Fur was considered an essential for those in upper class society, showing wealth and prominence. Elbow-length gloves were also used to show wealth, as well as sophistication and elegance. Polka dots were a major driving force in this time, being seen on multiple pieces of fashion during that time. In term of jewelry, pearls were all the rage and red pumps were a part of every woman's wardrobe. This is the basis of my outfit, I wanted to take all the trends of the 50's and use them to make a gorgeous and elegant outfit.

People are quick to romanticize the past, and forget a lot of the darker sides of it. Behind the aesthetic of cute dresses and permed hair, the 50s was an age of segregation, and the birth of the civil rights movement in America. Arguably this was sparked by Rosa Parks, a black woman who refused to give her seat on a bus to a white man.

My outfit is inspired by Rosa, based on one of her famous looks, and I've added cute little buses onto the dress.
As a black woman, Rosa is my idol. Next to Rachel Dolezal, of course.

I've taken a risk here, but hopefully it pays off. I never miss an opportunity to make a bad-humoured political statement.

(those are meant to be glasses, not some superhero mask, although of course Rosa is a superhero)
