5.Relate the characteristics of water to its polarity and hydrogen bonding between water molecules...
I cant find this awnser in my textbook.........can any1 help me?
this is a hard one, Im not entirely sure but i do know the following
water molecules look kinda like mickey mouse heads, the H are the ears the O is the face
since oxygen has a oxidation # of -2 and each hydrogen has an ox number of +1, when you make an H2O molecule, you technically have a nutral molecule, (2*1+-2 = 0)
however since both H atoms are near each other, the bare end of the O is actually slightly negative, and the hydrogen side is slightly positive
the O being negative is called electronegativity, (the ablitity to draw electrons towards the molecule)
since the O is electronegative and a hydrogen bond is , by deffinition a bond between an electronegative element and a H, thus water is supseptible to hydrogen bonding
^^ That was in yahoo answer. YOu should google stuff more often
Hydrogen bonds - weak bonds that form between small molecules (or within macromolecules), specifically involving an atom that has a partial negative charge, especially oxygen in water and in living things, and another atom (such as hydrogen) having a partial positive charge; results in 'sticking together' of molecules
