"AWARENESS"?

Oct 21, 2010 by CapricornsGhost
MAYBE I'M A BIT CYNICAL.

I DON'T KNOW...IT SEEMS LIKE EVERYWHERE I LOOK NOWADAYS, ALL I SEE ARE PEOPLE WEARING COLORS TO REPRESENT THEIR UNWAVERING DEDICATION TO MAKE OTHERS "AWARE" OF A PROBLEM, DISEASE, CONDITION, DISORDER, SEXUAL ORIENTATION, OR BASICALLY ANYTHING THAT CAN BE CATEGORIZED.

WOW...THAT'S A LOT OF "AWARENESS"...

BY MY COUNT, THAT'S 26 DIFFERENT COLORS, WITH WHO KNOWS HOW MANY MORE THAT WEREN'T LISTED THERE. BUT IT'S OKAY, BECAUSE THOSE 26 COLORS COVER ABOUT 130 DIFFERENT "AWARENESSES". GIVE OR TAKE A FEW, HOWEVER, SINCE SOME COLORS OVERLAP WHAT THEY REPRESENT.

IT WOULD SEEM THAT WE ARE A NATION THAT IS IN ALL ACTUALITY QUITE UN-AWARE OF WHAT MORONS WE ARE. CAN YOU NAME OUT OF THE 130 SOMETHING MEANINGS BEHIND THE COLORS AT LEAST 15 OFFHAND?

BECAUSE IF YOU CAN'T, THEN I GUESS THEY JUST AREN'T VERY GOOD AT MAKING US "AWARE", HUH?

BUT DON'T WORRY...AS SOME OF THE LISTED RIBBONS SHOW, YOU CAN GO TO THE CafePress.com STORE, WHICH OFFERS "YOUR COLOR HERE" RIBBON CLOTHING AND "YOUR COLOR HERE" RIBBON ITEMS FOR THE HOME AND OFFICE. (FOR A PRICE...)

SO AT LEAST YOUR HOME AND OFFICE WILL LOOK TRENDY WHEN GUESTS ARE VISITING. THEY'LL SEE ALL OF YOUR "AWARENESS" HANGING ON THE WALLS AND SITTING ON YOUR DESK AND THINK, "NOW THIS IS A PERSON THAT IS AWARE!". HELL, MAYBE THEY'LL EVEN HIGH-FIVE YOU FOR YOUR ALL ENCOMPASSING COMPASSION!

AS A GROWN ADULT, I LIKE TO THINK THAT WE'RE ALL INTELLIGENT ENOUGH TO BE AWARE OF MOST OF THESE THINGS WITHOUT NEEDING THEM TO BE COLOR CODED.

I ALSO LIKE TO THINK OF US AS INTELLIGENT ENOUGH TO NOT SPEND ANOTHER DIME ON THESE SO CALLED "AWARENESS RIBBONS". DON'T WE ALREADY SPEND ENOUGH MONEY ON BULLSHIT AS A NATION?

WHY FEED THE POCKETS OF PEOPLE THAT PRODUCE THE RIBBONS AND SHIRTS AND BRACELETS? AREN'T THEY JUST MAKING MONEY TO MAKE OTHERS "AWARE"?

I WONDER HOW MUCH IT COSTS TO CARE? IF I DON'T WEAR A RIBBON OR OTHER TRINKET, DOES THAT MEAN I CARE NOTHING FOR ANY OF THIS, OR DOES IT JUST MEAN THAT I COULDN'T AFFORD TO?

I LIKE TO THINK THAT THERE ARE OTHER PEOPLE OUT THERE LIKE ME WHO WOULD RATHER THROW ALL OF THESE "AWARENESS TOOLS" IN A BIG PILE AND WATCH IT BURN.

THEN MAYBE WE CAN ALL COME TOGETHER IN AN INTELLIGENT WAY TO ACTUALLY UNDERSTAND RATHER THAN REPRESENT A TREND.

Q: WHAT DID THE DYING WOMAN LYING IN THE HOSPITAL BED WITH STAGE 4 BREAST CANCER SAY TO THE TRENDY WOMAN IN THE HALL WEARING THE PINK RIBBON?
A: CAN YOU GET ME A DOCTOR?

FOR THOSE OF YOU THAT ARE A BIT SLOW, THAT MEANS SHE DIDN'T CARE THAT THE WOMAN HAD A RIBBON. SHE WANTED ACTUAL HELP, NOT THE FAKE "INTENT TO CARE" THAT THE RIBBON PROVIDED.

BUT MAYBE I'M A BIT CYNICAL.

i don't really believe in the commercial aspect of 'awareness' or advertising it.

But really if you just tell someone your story of something important to you, that's probably the most effective way of informing someone of something important to you that you struggle with.

I agree 100%. We don't need colors and ribbons and this and that, because after a while certain situations or diseases are only recognized. For example today with purple for LGBT or pink for breast cancer. It's really not fair for only those to be recognized when there are hundreds of others. I just feel that if you recognized it, then you accomplished something. If you donate, if you help out, if you just do something, then you are helping. Wearing a color or ribbon isn't going to do much.. you really have to step up and out there to do something about it.

AGREED...ACTUALLY DOING SOMETHING AS OPPOSED TO TALKING ABOUT OR REPRESENTING THE ACT OF DOING SOMETHING IS PROBABLY THE BETTER WAY TO GO.

It is. I can sit here and wear pink or red or whatever color of the rainbow.. but I'm not actually DOING anything about it. Yeah I can express my view on certain situations but not actually getting up and doing something about it, I'm not really helping. So going out there to spend money on ribbons and clothes just to wear isn't much.
