'Proper' English

Apr 18, 2009 by EnglishProf19
Hello all, sorry for this but I’m feeling the need to rant and rave but not about Tengaged.  Earlier today I was having a discussion with one of my friends about proper speech and the way that people misuse the English language.  The discussion started because I’m from Philadelphia and I use the word Yous a lot and it irks her.  So this prompted an argument about what is the proper way to address a group of people.  For her You is the only acceptable way and she was arguing that everyone should learn ‘proper’ English.  I was arguing that the purpose of spoken language is to communicate and nothing else.  I was trying to make the distinction between spoken language and written language and she wasn’t seeing the difference and it was really annoying to try and have an argument about ‘proper’ English when she wouldn’t acknowledge that there was a big difference between the goals of spoken and written language.
