Welcome to Round 12 - as the Final Five, you've overcome a lot ot get here with a lot of interesting musical selections.
As another 2-in-1 round, I would like you all to submit two songs that fit... OPPOSITES ATTRACT! For this, simply find 2 songs that you deem as opposite - whether that's in tone, in message, in anything. Music really is about opposites overall, so I wanna see how you can do this.
Along with your two videos, please tag along a brief explanation of what difference you're highlighting in your songs. Part of the scoring is going to be me making sure that the differences are really there, along with the quality of the music itself, so feel free to discuss it! You'll have about 24 hours (~5:30 EST on 12/18) to submit your songs! Best of luck!
Here's your updated placement chart up to this point :)
OKAY I'M TAKING A RISK. PLEASE DON'T BE SOMEONE THAT IRRATIONALLY HATES COUNTRY.
I am submitting "The Good Ones" by Gabby Barrett and "Cowboy Casanova" by Carrie Underwood. The most obvious difference is the men they are singing about. Gabby sings about her fiancé/husband being one of the "Good Ones"/a good guy, and Carrie sings about a devilish casanova that the gals should run from. The music is also opposite. The music in The Good Ones is upbeat while the music in Cowboy Casanova is ominous.
I'm going to try to really lean into the theme. My first song is "Litost" by X Ambassadors. Litost is a Czech term that has no literal English translation, but it loosely translates to "a state of agony cause by the realization of one's own misery." The state of litost in this song is the singer realizing the misery he's in in his relationship. The song is slow, dark, and kind of heavy.
What's the opposite of litost? Realizing not your misery, but your state of happiness and self-satisfaction. Cue Diana Ross and her song "I'm Coming Out." This song is really the embodiment of coming out and being happy with yourself. Musically, it's bright, upbeat, and funky. The instrumentation is different. Listening to this song puts you in a great mood, while "Litost" is much more somber.
These two songs are both really, really good for different reasons. Hope you enjoy them =)
I have chosen Water Me by FKA Twigs and Hyperballad by Bjork. Water Me is about the loss of a relationship, while Hyperballad is about a relationship that continues and feeds someone's desire to keep living.
Spun by Ängie glamorizes drug use. She brags about being “spun,” a euphemism for being under the influence throughout the entire song and how glamorous her life is. “Hey you got drugs” by Tove Lo describes the darker side of drug use and being strung out all the time. I could go further but I nearly forgot to submit this week and I’m at work
