“Sister Roxanna Maria, wait!” Said a tall tanned man running towards a shorter woman with a dark robe covering her body, fluttering in the fluid air around her. She kept her stride however, adjusting the jet black hood that covered her head, matching the dark robes that seemed to twist in the wind around her. Her face, the only bare part of her body, was painted white, with short, bold, black lines at the top, bottom, and sides of her head. At her nose and the edge of her cheeks around that lay a peach colored blush, almost speckled on her face, as if it was a blown on with a small straw. She bit her bare pink lip, as they seemed to blister and chap against the cold, winter air. She gripped the dark brown fur shawl around her shoulders as she increased her pace.
She turned her head to look behind her, finding relief in seeing that the man was gone, only to turn her head and bump into a tall pale looking man, with dirty blonde hair and broad shoulders. He bore a dark suit and nothing tainted his handsome features accept three red dots under each eye. “Sister, we’ve been looking for you. We have some things that we must ask you.”
“I know nothing,” Roxanna said with regret in her voice. Her nose ran from the cold and her body shook. Whether that was from the cold or sheer fear and nervousness, she did not know. “Please, please, leave me be. I want nothing more to do with this. If God may strike me down now so that I do not have to lay my eyes upon those whores and silly women, then a smile would grace my lips after my life drained away.”
“You don’t mean such bitter words.” A pale hand touched her shoulder reassuringly and let her body relax.
“Aye, I do. You must’ve forgotten, these aren’t our days of reckless frolicking around. We are adults. We have responsibilities to keep our lives; they aren’t in the hands of others. I’d very much love to keep mine, so if you’d move out of my way now.”
“You forget who this is. I am Hunter, remember? I would never do anything to hurt you, nor would I let anyone hurt you. Frank is brainwashed and you know that. But he cannot forget what he owes me as well. Worry not about him.”
A long drawn sigh escaped her lips, and she warmly, despite the cold, took his hand and led him to a nearby bench. As far away from the bench as she could manage. As they sat down, she took off her hood and used her fur clad shawl to roughly wipe the paint and makeup off of her face. She lightly and swiftly took the skinny, golden pin that held her bun up, and pulled it out with her long, French tipped nails. She shook her head as long, chocolate locks flowed down, and looked into Hunter’s eyes. “Listen, they… I-I did some things that I am not proud of. Those wretches… those… they… By God, I cannot find the words. Where has my voice gone? I’ve wondered that a lot lately. Maybe that’s why I never came to you. Maybe that’s why you had to chase me down.”
He took his coarse hand and softly brushed it against her chin. “I want nothing but what you care to give me. I hate to drag this demon out of you but, please, tell me what you know.”
Roxanna took a deep drawn breath, and the cold air hitched her. She continued anyways, letting the words and emotions pour out of her.
