The more keys and apples appear depending on the game activity. Usually, it is a lot higher for a key to appear when 30+ comments were made before the next update. Maybe PM activity counts, but I know that is true for public comments which isn't the case for a 20 post. It's random, but activity makes them appear more frequently.
