New's Movie Taste: All Stars - ROUND 6 (RESULTS)

Aug 26, 2022 by NewNightmare7
Yeah this one went by fast af! I only had to watch 1 movie cause ive seen the others quite alot.

So as I said last week there will now be only 1 winner and 2 high placements. Still not feeling the lows so yeah!

Here are all the critiques:

Symmetry888 - Aliens (1986) - LMAO not the Sigourney Weaver comment. I died. Ok but seriously I love this movie. I think I love Alien more (its like my fav horror movie) but by god one of the sequels ever, sci fi movies ever and action movies ever. James Cameron really went "I see you bitch but what if we add more" and did it with adding just enough lore and curiosity and amazing performances and action like girl I could go forever. And James Horner's score is amazing. Mans really sold the war in space aspect I stan. I also love the effects. The aliens look great, that queen alien still looks badass to this day and im just...yes. Pheomenal pick and a sequel done right!

demgirl6 - The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013) - I was HYPED as hell for this movie back in 2013. Like literally i would follow all the press releases before the premiere, I was obsessed with that first movie and well I wasn't entirely obsessed but I did really like the movie! Its definitely the best of the sequels and the only one i'd rewatch with the original. Its very close to the source material and still captures that raw energy of the original (to a lesser extent but pop off). If there is one thing i've noticed about these young adult movie type stuff is that they tend to go somewhere else with their concept snd then make it political cause thats what teens wanna see...politics! This movie didnt do it as bad as others but its there! Like this might be the sadist in me but i wanna see the hunger games, not the hour and a half of politics leading up to it. It sounds like im shitting on this movie but let me stress again i do like it. Jena Malone is amazing as is Amanda Plummer, Sam Claflin and Lynn Cohen. The returning cast is great too and when it gets to the games its riveting as hell. I love it. I just wish it was more that. Overall though it is a sequel done well and faithful.

nateclove - The Strangers: Prey at Night (2018) - I know alot of people weren't really vibing with this movie but I dont know what the fuck they were on because I actually love this movie. Its such a different more slick approach to the original's formula but its different enough to be its own thing and I love that. I like the family dynamic and I love the strangers. Its more fun this time around to see them fuck with them rather than the first which was just brutal. While it doesn't capture the same spirit as the og I do find this to be the more accessible one and without a doubt it is a sequel done right!

austino15fffan - Saw II (2005) - Honestly this is probably my favourite Saw movie because it takes everything that made the original great and upped it in every way (except the twist but this twist is iconic in its own way). The house setting is my favourite location in the Saw series, Amanda is my favourite character so seeing more of her is much bueno and the traps are great! Venus Fly Trap, Needle Pit (my fav), Razor Box, Furnace I adore them. I dont know this movie just has an interesting charm to me. It follows the plot closely, it ups the traps, Tobin Bell is in it more which is a plus, Charlie Clouser kills the score, its great! This is a sequel done right and even better!

JayElVeeIsBack - X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014) - This is definitely an interesting one! After a very back to basics type film that was First Class (and the best X-Men movie in my opinion) this one just goes all over the place but unlike the rest of the series afterward it works! The timeline gets confusing as fuck but the story itself is riveting. I love Jennifer Lawrence's Mystique (in the first two of her films) but obviously the star is Hugh Jackman just slaying the game. He was the perfect character to go back in time to solve the crisis. The action is well done and the score is fine! That being said, Its probably maybe 4th on my X-Men rankings cause I love the charm of the first two and I think First Class is one of the best comic book films ever. So it does have a hard time comparing but it is a great movie so bueno!

CarolinaSteele - The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002) - Lmao I knew it! Well you told me before hand but I still knew it! Honestly kind of iconic of you to send all 3 in the trilogy and I must say I think this might be my favourite? Purely based on tone. Its dark, its gritty? It has Brad Dourif and Christopher Lee like what else could you ask for? It also introduces Gollum and has that epic fucking battle that is my fav of the series. The score is sorrowful and hopeless but also hopeful and like I dont know it just works. Even as a 2nd movie in a trilogy where those types can be hella stagnant, it has a start, middle and finish to alot of arcs and storylines (while still keeping the characters going for the next movie). Its without a doubt a sequel done right (although its a bit of a cheat considering it was all made simultaneously but its a vibe).

turkeylover - A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987) - Yas girly picking my favourite Elm Street sequel! This was the one I watched obssessivelh as a kid. Its such a vibe. Its got amazing practical effects and like ok cgi but was probably amazing for its time. Amazing freddy liners and some inventive as fuck kills oh my god. Tara's is one of my favourite kills in horror history cause its just creepy af but Jennifer's is a standout too. The score is fun 80's shit and Heather Langenkamp is a boss ass bitch I love her and Patricia Arquette. Absolutely a sequel done amazingly well.

PennyTrationStan - How to Train Your Dragon 2 (2014) - Ive never seen the sequels of the original. I love the original alot so im surprised but now I get to! I think off the bat, the animation is stunning as fuck and that first one has some great animation. The score is epic and amazing I love it. I really like the story. It added alot of worldbuilding and character building for Stoick in particular which I liked and then of course the ending happened like ok crush my soul. I also liked the conflict of instead of fighting dragons, weaponizing em. It was a cool take on it. I dont really have much else to say about it except that its really solid and entertaining. Absolutely a sequel done right. If i had any gripe against it, its a little too long but ultimately its still great.
