I was just thinking, technically when you eat cake it goes to your stomach so you still actually have it until it gets digested. (it's on your person)

So it should be: You can eat your cake and have it for a while until it's digested.

I don't remember anyone ever mentioning that the cake has to be on the table after you've eaten it, just that you need to have it after you've eaten it.
