Survivor: Samoa Interview - Ben Oct 11, 2009
imageOctober 7, 2009 - Ben made a big impression with his tribe on Survivor - but not in the positive way. Whether getting kicked out of a challenge or having a heated argument with a contestant that some felt had racial overtones, a lot of controversy surrounded Ben during his time in the game – until he was voted out at last week's Tribal Council.

I spoke to Ben, to see what he had to say about his actions in Survivor: Samoa and whether he felt he has anything to atone for.

IGN: How did you come to be on the show?

Ben: I was discovered in Venice Beach, walking down the boardwalk.

IGN: Had you seen the show much beforehand?

Ben: I'd seen some earlier seasons, but I don't watch TV regularly, so I hadn't been watching it. When I found out I was going to be on the show, I started watching a few more episodes.

IGN: Once you got to know the rest of your tribe, did you have a plan for who you wanted to align with long term?

Ben: Well, I did have an alliance with Russell. That's what they didn't show. He and I pretty much hung out the whole time and we did most of the work around camp. He and I had a pretty good friendship. We remain friends off the show.
IGN: What did you think of him dumping out the water and burning the socks?

Ben: I thought it was genius. That's pretty smart. He's playing the game!

IGN: Were you surprised to learn he'd found the hidden idol?

Ben: No, he showed it to me right off the bat. They didn't show that on the show, but I knew he had it right from when he found it.

IGN: Did you two talk about other people you wanted to work with going forward?

Ben: Yeah. We had lots of conversations about who to get rid of and obviously there was a lot of controversy surrounding me and they wanted to get me out of there, so Russell kind of had to adapt. It's a game. As much as you're friends on there, everybody's playing for a million bucks, so you're bound to get stabbed in the back, one way or the other. I don't think Russell stabbed me in the back by any means. I just think he's playing the game.

IGN: What did you think caused all the issues between you and your tribemates?

Ben: Oversensitivity and misinterpretation. I think Jaison tried to play the race card a lot, and call me a racist, which is just funny to me. Anybody that knows me knows that I'm not a racist, from interracial relationships to either just friends that I have, everybody knows that's a bunch of crap. And it's funny to see that on TV. As inaccurate as it is, it makes me laugh.

IGN: So when it comes to Yasmin, do you stand by your comments to her and that what you said was how you perceived the situation with her in particular?

Ben: Yeah. What they didn't show on TV… I completely stand by everything that I've said. Yasmin and I are actually friends, after the show. We've talked, we've hung out and everything is completely cool. It was funny that when I asked Jaison -- They didn't show this and I wish they would have -- he said that if you call somebody ghetto trash, that refers to them being black or if you're calling somebody a ho -- because I said "pimp slap a ho" -- he said that's referring to them being black. And I said, "Well, that kind of makes you come off as a racist. If you're saying all these things are saying people are black – if they're a ho, or if they're 'ghetto trash'" – I said, "What if those people were white?" And he couldn't answer the question, and it made him just look like an idiot. And I said, "Internationally, the ghetto was something that was Jewish. It wasn't even derived from black culture." So it just made me laugh. As much as he was calling me ignorant, he was the ignorant one.

IGN: That all took place during Tribal Council?

Ben: Yeah, and they didn't show it. So I wish they would have, but you know what, that's just the editing process.

Russell Hantz Oct 6, 2009
imageRussell Hantz is being promoted as the Best Survivor Villain ever in this season of Survivor Samoa, that was filmed on Upolu, one of the two major islands in Samoa.

This is the 19th season of Survivor.

Russell Hantz however, seems to be bent on claiming the title of best survivor villain for himself and will do everything he can to be hated and loathed by everyone.

Hantz is an oil company owner and some of his exploits include lying about being affected by Hurricane Katrina, sabotaging his own tribe by dumping out fresh water and burning peoples' socks.

Hantz's whole strategy hinges on the fact that he will be able to manipulate everyone once they are in a weakened state with lack of water and food. And socks apparently. Except his team will be so weak they won't be able to win immunity challenges.
