I don't get it. It says twelve people play but only two people compete. What does that mean?

12 people do a challenge. The highest scorer is immune. They choose someone to be immune. That person than chooses someone else. And so on until 1 person is left. The 1 person chooses someone to go into the duel with them. Those 2 duel. The lower scorer of those 2 is gone.
