1. Smoking is the largest single preventable cause of death and disease in Australia. There are around 19,000 tobacco caused deaths each year. That's 52 a day.
2. About half of all smokers die from smoking-related diseases. If you are a long-term smoker, on average, your life expectancy is about 10 years less than a non-smoker.
3. The younger you are when you start smoking, the more likely you are to smoke for longer and to die early from smoking.
4. Many smoking-related deaths are not 'quick deaths'. For example, if you develop COPD you can expect several years of illness and distressing symptoms before you die.
5. Lung cancer. About 30,000 people in the UK die from lung cancer each year. More than 8 in 10 cases are directly related to smoking.
6. Smoking makes you short of breath, making sport and exercise more difficult.
7. Children as young as 5 years old have tried cigarettes. Kids are more likely to try smoking if they have seen their brothers or sisters doing it.
8. Cigarettes don't make you relax. Nicotine is a stimulant. It actually speeds up your bodily functions - especially your heart rate.
9. Kissing someone with a mouth like an ashtray isn't sexy. Having smoke blown in your face isn't sexy. Lung cancer isn't sexy. However, buying someone special a gift with the money you didn't spend on smoking is definitely sexy
