Alice was his girlfriend that was with the three bad guys right, I dont recall them saying much about the origins of the bad vamps in there.

in the book it talks about how alice was put in a mental institution for seeing the future and that's when james tried to kill her, but another "good" vampire saved her by turning her into a vampire. so james killed the guy who made alice, which is why when she woke up as a vampire she was alone.
