I mean seriously it's not culturally distinct enough to justify secession

It already is a country for one. And if the people want to be independent, then that's their prerogative. If the UK wants to avoid a civil war, they will grant them their independence peacefully.
Moonfelar are you dumb? what do you think this referendum is about? if it is a yes vote them becoming an independent country is legally bound. there has never been even a suggestion or hint of a civil war.
gayjohnny it can mean anything, but the 4 distinct sections of the UK are countries. That is their identifier the same way that there states in the US and provinces in Canada. When a country is independent, it is actually refereed to as a Sovereign State or a Sovereignty or a Sovereign Nation.
simplyobsessed I know this, but the reason the referendum exists is to allow the Scottish people to decide, and then allow the UK government to allow it to happen. If the UK opposed it, it may lead to a civil war. It was hypothetical.
Simplyobsessed that is not the American definition. Our definition requires that they control their own affairs and are not a part of a larger country.
