Why does Scotland need to be a country

Sep 18, 2014 by GayJohnny
I mean seriously it's not culturally distinct enough to justify secession

It already is a country for one. And if the people want to be independent, then that's their prerogative. If the UK wants to avoid a civil war, they will grant them their independence peacefully.

That's quite rude of you, I doubt you know much if anything about Scottish culture?

Even tho I hope they vote no

A country means an independent nation.

Moonfelar are you dumb? what do you think this referendum is about? if it is a yes vote them becoming an independent country is legally bound. there has never been even a suggestion or hint  of a civil war.

No, it's more of a province right now
Sent by GayJohnny,Sep 18, 2014
gayjohnny it can mean anything, but the 4 distinct sections of the UK are countries. That is their identifier the same way that there states in the US and provinces in Canada. When a country is independent, it is actually refereed to as a Sovereign State or a Sovereignty or a Sovereign Nation.
Sent by Moonfelar,Sep 18, 2014
This is a linguistic difference.  In the US, country means sovereign state.

simplyobsessed I know this, but the reason the referendum exists is to allow the Scottish people to decide, and then allow the UK government to allow it to happen. If the UK opposed it, it may lead to a civil war. It was hypothetical.

GayJohnny : Country: "a nation with its own government, occupying a particular territory."

THAT IS WHAT SCOTLAND IS.

Simplyobsessed that is not the American definition.  Our definition requires that they control their own affairs and are not a part of a larger country.

prove it gayjohnny

and even if you are right, the american definition is not the only true one.
