Reviewing Gen. 7 Pokemon (Cutiefly - Wishiwashi)

Apr 10, 2017 by Icarus_Mark
Hey everyone!  Welcome back to me reviewing every Gen. 7 Pokemon!  I feel I should try getting some more in to make up for my absence, so there will be another 5 to go over.  It seems like lately, I’ve been only getting Pokemon that are mostly fair Pokemon with a few (and by "a few", I mean like 1.25 since the 2nd I like is only one of 4 forms of Oricorio) that I genuinely like enough to actually say that I do like.  Let’s get right down to it.

So first up, we have the Bug/Fairy Cutiefly.  I will say right here that Bug/Fairy is a pretty interesting typing.  I will also say that this evolutionary line is lucky as fuck that the Bug-type does not have that weakness to Poison it did in Generation 1.  Otherwise, we’d be dealing with a 4x weakness to Poison in this line, and that would be no fun as the Poison type has been on the rise ever since the 6th Generation introduced the Fairy type, and the fact that Team Skull uses a LOT of Poison types means Cutiefly and Ribombee would both be fucked in the ass sideways in those fights.  Design-wise, Cutiefly is actually really friendly-looking, which is normal for Fairy-types whose names aren’t Xerneas and/or the Tapus.  However, this really doesn’t do too well with me.  I don’t really know it too well, nor do I care to find out more about this Pokemon.  But I don’t dislike it either, so it’ll get a low Fair.

Cutiefly then evolves into Ribombee.  Honestly, fairies and bees just don’t mesh well for me.  Plus, we already have Beedrill, who got a Mega Evolution.  The intention might have been good, but I don’t really know about this Pokemon.  It isn’t very original aside from the typing, but it does get some redemption points design-wise.  Also, I do find it pretty neat it had the Immunity to Dragon and can be an excellent wall for Fighting types and Dark types as well.  There are some key matchups it could win outside those types too like Psychic.  But it also runs into the some flaws its pre-evolution had, including the Team Skull thing.  Ribombee will also fall under Fair.

Right after a rather lukewarm evolutionary line is the Rockruff line!  Now, Cutiefly may have something that identifies it as “cute” in its species name, but Rockruff is one of the cutest Pokemon you’ll see coming into the Pokedex from Alola, putting it up there with Rowlet, Litten, and even Pikipek for how cute it is.  Also, let’s be fair, I’ve been wanting a wolf Pokemon to be added for some time now, and now we finally have one thanks to this evolutionary line, although I actually pictured maybe a Fire Starter could be a Fire/Ice wolf for its final evolution.  Rockruff is also memorable because you see it with Kukui at the beginning at the game when you are being welcomed into Alola by his video log or whatever (because Kukui TOTALLY uses Skype) and you can’t help but love this thing.

Rockruff will evolve into Lycanroc, and not only that, but depending on what game you get, you either get the Midday Form (evolve by day if you’re playing Sun) or the Midnight Form (evolve at night if you’re playing Moon).  So let’s go over each form.  I personally got the Midday Form, so I have more knowledge with the Midday Form.  That being said, Midday Lycanroc gives the Rock-type some much needed Speed as it has a high Speed Stat and Accelerock.  Normally with Rock-types I have to suck up going last and probably have the hit ratio of a batter in baseball, so Midday Lycanrock is a beaut and a welcome change in how you play with Rock-types.  Midnight Form has the better design, but although it’s not quite so fast, it actually fits the motif of a night wolf like a champ.  You’ll have to deal with a lot of weaknesses, but at least now you can we have a Pokemon that not only makes for an awesome evolution to a cute Pokemon, but improves on its type in innovative ways and is just a genuine badass.  I love Lycanroc!

The final Pokemon for now is Wishiwashi, and this one’s interesting as this is who you have to face for your 2nd trial.  If you started with Litten, I hope you have an Electric-type with you to face Wishiwashi with!  But this Pokemon is quite unique in its Ability where it transforms into a school of fish to make an even LARGER fish!  In this form, its power can rival that of some of the most competitive Pokemon in the game despite its HP still being a joke.  However, Wishiwashi can also be a gamble as not only do you have to get to Level 20 to even be able to put Schooling into use, but even once you get there, if your HP is less than 25% (which is easy to do given its low base HP even in the Schooling Form), it goes back to its weak form, making it pathetically easy to finish off.  But thank God when you get Wishiwashi it’s not that far from Level 20, so it can easily coast along for the first few levels before contributing to the vitality of your party.  Also, Wishiwashi in both forms is, while not the greatest, still pretty decent in design, so that’s a good plus.  All in all, Wishiwashi is a fine Pokemon.

I actually really like Ribombee! And yes, I got Moon for both the legendary and the midnight form Lycanroc.... I adore it.

Ah yeah, I thought of getting Moon too MickyBoomy9, but I only have Sun, so I will probably be more knowledgeable with the Pokemon in Sun than I will with the Moon Pokemon.  But yeah, as you can see, Midnight Lycanroc got a solid review from me even though I have only used the Midday Lycanroc.

Yup! I also love midday form, but I don't really battle competitively so I stick with midnight!
