Reviewing Gen. 7 Pokemon (Drampa - Kommo-o)

Apr 17, 2017 by Icarus_Mark
Welcome back to me reviewing every Generation 7 Pokemon!  Now, the last few days, I’ve been busy with work and Easter.  However, now I can focus on finishing this project out!  The plan for the Ultra Beasts will be to do the first 4 in one blog and the other 3 in another.  Because I have heard the Ultra Beasts were based on the 7 Deadly Sins, I will try and categorize each Ultra Beast to a Deadly Sin as a bit of an extra for you guys.

Anywho, today’s Pokemon will be Drampa, Dhelmise, and then we will have the Pseudo-Legendary evolutionary line for Alola in this blog.  So let’s get started.

Drampa – Now, what’s fascinating about this new dragon is that it isn’t like most other dragons that have been introduced in Pokemon.  It is representative to a wise dragon, much like Quetzal from the PBS Show “Dragon Tales” (am I getting the name right here?) was like a wise, elderly dragon.  The Normal/Dragon type combination is actually interesting.  These are the 2 types that can never have a doubly super-effective moves because of how the type match-ups are displayed (Normal is not strong against any type while Dragon is only super-effective against itself).  It is because of this type combination though that it gets an Immunity to Ghost, so that’s a good plus.  However, the 4 weaknesses it has are commonly used, so it’s going to need a good deal of support.  Thankfully, if it does go to less than half its HP, its already high Special Attack will go up if it has the Ability Berserk.  If it has Sap Sipper, Drampa gains a second Immunity by no longer taking damage from Grass moves.  So it’s a cool Pokemon to have, but it’s a Moon exclusive, and even in Moon you can only get it in Mount Lanakila.  Plus, the Speed is atrocious, so yeah…  But it is a cool Pokemon nonetheless, so while I won’t go as far as to say I love it, I will say I do like it.

Dhelmise – One thing I was not expecting was an anchor Pokemon.  However, there’s a lot that is wrong with Dhelmise.  First, it’s Grass/Ghost, which is a type that is already more prominent in Decidueye, so this will get overlooked if you are playing with Rowlet as your Starter.  Also, the typing doesn’t make sense to NOT be a Water-type since where you get it is in Seafolk Village, and water is the first thing that comes to people’s minds when thinking of anchors since, well, anchors are used in the middle of a fucking ocean!  Water/Steel would honestly have been a better choice for this as anchors are hard like steel and are used in the water.  The only explanation I can think of for the decision to type it like this is if Dhelmise was based off an anchor for a sunken ship.  Also, it’s much too rare to really be impactful compared to other Generation 7 Pokemon.  Unless you’re fishing in a special area, the encounter rate’s 1%, and even when you do, it only goes up to 10%.  This means you can literally bypass it even if you didn’t choose Rowlet or caught another Grass Pokemon up to this point.  I don’t know why you wouldn’t not have a Grass-type  on your team by the time you get to Poni Island, but yeah.  Now, statwise, it’s decent.  Its physical stats are 13 for Attack and 100 for Defense, and Special Defense is 90, so even with the weaknesses it has it can take hits just fine.  It also has the movepool to support its physical prowess.  But it’s another Pokemon that is slow as molasses with 40 Speed, so even with good physical stats, I’ll bypass this.  I don’t despise Dhelmise, but it’s far from a great Pokemon.

Jangmo-o – This is the initial form of the Pseudo-Legendary line, and to be honest, it’s cute enough.  Its Abilities are good too as one gives it Immunity from sound moves while another protects it from ball or bomb moves.  You’ll get this at Vast Poni Canyon, so you’re not going to know this form for very long, I’m afraid.  It evolves at Level 35, so if you do happen upon a wild Jangmo-o and catch it, it will evolve very quickly.  This is because by the time you get to Vast Poni Canyon, not only will your Pokemon be well past 35, but it will most likely be true your party will be at the level it evolves into its final form, which it does at 45.  Also, you catch this at anywhere from 41-44, so yeah, you really only get this so you can evolve it right away.  So it doesn’t break new ground, but it’s okay I guess.  Definitely a Fair.

Hakamo-o – Upon evolution into Hakamo-o, it gains the Fighting-type.  That means that rip this Pokemon once it goes up against a Fairy.  That is because it is 4x weak to Fairy, a typing commonly used thanks to the fact it was a type meant to nerf dragons.  In the wild, it can only be encountered if in an SOS Battle, and at the same level as you would encounter Jangmo-o, so really, it’s better to just get the Jangmo-o and evolve it.  It looks more like a dinosaur design-wise than a dragon, but I’m not complaining!  Tyrantrum, who was based on a T-Rex, is a Rock/Dragon!  But like Jangmo-o, Hakamo-o is really only there for the easy evolution into the Pseudo-Legendary I am about to discuss.

Kommo-o – Today ends with Generation 7’s Pseudo-Legendary, Kommo-o!  The scales it has on almost makes me think of a Native American tribal chief when looking at Kommo-o, and it does look badass.  Just like Hakamo-o before it, you don’t want this out against Fairy-types because of the 4x weakness.  Also, many people have considered this to be the most disappointing Pseudo-Legendary ever, and while I do see that, I actually wasn’t all that taken with Metagross and was somewhat disappointed at first with Goodra, so for me at least it’s up for debate.  It has a signature move called “Clanging Scales”, which lowers the Defense of any Pokemon it attacks, and with that move’s base 110 Power, that can be a real damager unless you have a Fairy-type with you.  Now, with that said, it is your final Totem Pokemon to face, and that is probably one of the most predictable things about the game you can come up with.  It’s slightly better from a physical standpoint than a special one, but no stat it has is too low thank goodness.  Kommo-o is definitely one of the weakest Pseudo-Legendary Pokemon of the 8 we have, but it is by no means a bad Pokemon.  Cases can be made for Fair and Like, but I think I am going to put it in Fair because it really doesn’t stand out aside from it being the Pseudo-Legendary Pokemon.  Tomorrow, we will begin going through the Legendary Pokemon starting with the Tapus.
