A Fairy Tale: Jekyll-and-Hyde in Rookies

Jul 24, 2010 by Philomena
Once upon a time, there was a monster living in the kingdom of Tengaged. He had been terrorising the residents, who eventually took him to stand trial before the King and Queen. The Royalty decided that for the sake of peace and harmony in the kingdom, he had to be banished. And he was.

The borders were hardly impenetrable, though, and it was not difficult for the monster to eventually return. Of course he disguised himself as a decent girl first, but the King and Queen gave him a pardon anyway upon finding out, provided he behaved himself.

The Rookies Game

One day, he saw a household that was playing Rookies and decided to join in the fun. The game progressed smoothly, and he enjoyed everyone's company for 48 hours. At the end of day 2, the Head of Household had to nominate two people for eviction, and chose him as one of them. That was the usual routine at the end of each day, and exhausted by the stress of waiting for the outcome, the players all went to sleep.

The monster had been asleep at midnight, but woke up soon after to find himself nominated. It was a full moon, and probably the worst time to enrage him. Suddenly, he switched from Jekyll to Hyde and raged furiously. "I was once banished from this Kingdom, but now I'm back!" he announced. All the members of the household shivered in their shoes.

But there was surely no problem. After all, they could vote him out. The Power of Veto could even save one of the other nominees just in case something unexpected happened. One day of this nonsense would have been tolerable and easily shrugged off. It was now time to vote out the second person to be evicted, and everyone was looking forward to it.

The Nightmare continued

The votes were bizarre, unfortunately. Four people had voted to get him out, but two had voted to save him. 14 points worth of votes were for him, but unfortunately 14 points were for someone else too (not the one protected by the Veto, sadly). There was a tie, and the Rookies producers had to consult the rulebook. "The rules say that in the event of a tie, the player who came to Tengaged first wins," said the host. To the poor unfortunate who had tied with him, he said, "The household has spoken. It's time for you to go." Despite strong protests from the other players, this happened, and the gleeful monster had earned the right to stay for another 24 hours. In fact, he had 48 hours as he had not been nominated since people had incorrectly assumed he would be leaving.

And it was 48 hours of misery for everyone. The monster did his best to make life miserable, and succeeded to the point at which one player wrote a letter of complaint to the King and Queen. However, they did not banish him from the Kingdom just yet, and they had no power to even evict him from the game. They warned him, though. "Now, monster, please don't be so mean to those poor people, just because they allied together," said the king. "They are really upset, you know," said the queen. "Why don't you be nice to them instead, so that they will not want to vote you out?" The monster listened to their advice and reverted to Jekyll and hoped for the best. For a while, it was peaceful in the household. But he was still nominated, and switched to Hyde mode, making life unbearable for all.

This time, there was no mistake in the voting, though. To the relief and immense joy of the other players, the monster left the game. He was in Jekyll mode when departing, and his rather cryptic parting words were, "I met some amazing people. They all loved me. Look at how sad they were when they saw I was evicted."

Epilogue:

The other players had in the meantime investigated why two players had supported the monster. One pleaded that he had done so inadvertently, and was believed. The other had no excuse, and as punishment it was decided that he was to be the next to be evicted.

An investigation was also carried out. "Our policy is not to carry out a background check on our candidates," explained a Rookies spokesman. "As long as they are at least yellow we accept them." Under pressure, he later admitted, "We realise that we have allowed some really appalling and abusive language to slip through unedited, and sincerely apologise for this incident that has damaged the reputation of the kingdom of Tengaged."

The King and Queen made no comments, but as they did not banish him, there was nothing to prevent the monster from joining other productions. He was seen joining another household even before he had been evicted from the previous one.
