Hello, long time lurker, first time poster. I get asked a lot about my craziest work story since I work overnights at a gas station and this is the one I always go with. I've been sitting on it for a few years and figured it was finally time to share it here:
I had arrived at work one night as normal, to see one older looking customer deep in conversation with my female coworker. I couldn't quite understand everything he was saying, but the word "prophet" kept coming up. Once I had clocked in, she came over to tell me about what he was talking about. Said something about him looking to recruit people for a new religion but wasn't sure on the extent of it, and that he made her feel super uncomfortable about the whole thing. Then she left. I tried talking to this man, to see if he was just a customer and needed help or anything, but he didn't seem as interested in talking to me as he was the female coworker. I didn't think much of it and pressed on with my night as usual.
For the entirety of my shift, this man would either be standing in his usual spot (to the side of the counter/registers but not blocking anyone's path) or outside in his car. At one point, the police showed up for their nightly check with the stores in the area and I mentioned the creepy man, but when they went to check on him he appeared to be asleep so they did nothing.
Around 2am, I finally got him to start talking to me. I don't remember the exact quotes but what I got from him is this: His intentions at our store were to die there. He claimed that god had told him to show up to our gas station to get shot outside it, and that he would be resurrected as the leader of the new world religion, so he was looking for disciples/prophets to join him (females only). I freaked out and told him to leave immediately, he went outside and I thought that was the end of it.
When my boss arrived in the morning, the man came back inside and resumed his usual staring at us. I explained the situation to my boss, who proceeded to get up in the man's face and yell at him to leave immediately, which the guy complied with. We thought it was over then, but not QUITE. About 10 minutes later, the man rushes back inside, slaps a piece of paper on our counter, and bolts, gunning it out of the parking lot. We go to read the paper and it says: "Today you have committed a grave sin. You are sinners, and god is very angry at you. The next time we meet, I will be sinning." We called the police and launched an investigation on this guy but to my knowledge nothing came up.
I heard a rumor not too long ago that this man was now harassing people at the other gas station from the same chain in our town, but they haven't done anything about him since they're a lot more ratchet than us. This may have been a few years ago, but this was a horrifying night that will live with me for the rest of my life.
