2 GENDERS? SOCIAL CONSTRUCT?

May 15, 2017 by personofinterest
OK I KNOW THIS IS SO OVERDONE but i'm having lots of thoughts about this and I believe that gender is NOT a social construct and there are only two genders. I believe gender is different than sex but is inherently related to sex.

There have been studies showing many differences between men and women, and how these IN GENERAL correspond with certain traits and qualities that we deem feminine/masculine. This is also why we see more women take on roles in society that are more caretaker and nurturing based, such as becoming a nurse or a teacher, and more men in the sciences and engineering, for example. This has nothing to do with what society has deemed appropriate for men and women to do but rather our biology and the makeup of our brains. There are also other biological differences that lead men to be more aggressive, have a larger sex drive, while woman tend to be more empathetic, etc. This is obviously a generalization, but these difference in the male and female biology can help us understand the differences in gender, and the roles it plays in society.

TRANSGENDERISM is a form of gender dysphoria. There are studies that show that, for example a transgender male will have parts of their brain which match up to a cisgender male, even before transitioning. This does not make there gender any less valid. A transgender man has the gender of a man. This actually further proves that gender is not a social construct because of the nature vs nurture debate. This born FEMALE couldn't be "nurtured" by society into having the gender of a woman because his natural gender was a man.

I don't believe there are more than two genders. The main debate is that someone may not feel completely connected with every trait that a woman/man is deemed to have "by society". A woman that doesn't like pink or doesn't like to wear dresses is still a woman. There is a difference between masculine/feminine and male/female (with regards to gender).  A "gender fluid" person may feel more masculine one day and more feminine another, but these are just traits of the genders itself. I may like romantic comedies but I am still a man. I may like the colour pink but I am still a man. Your gender cannot change, and I'm sure a transgender person will be the first person to vouch for this.

My problem with the whole 63 genders is that there is no science whatsoever behind it. I feel like these people who identify somewhere in between the binary see a woman as a skinny girl with big boobs in a tight pink dress cooking for her family, whereas gender can be expressed in many different ways. You can be a woman and not want kids, you can be a man and become a nurse. You are still a woman, you are still a man. These are just generalizations we have made as a society based on biology and sex.

ANYWAYS i'm totally up to have a debate about this I'm 100% open to having a discussion about this. I've just had a lot of thoughts lately about this!! No hate this isn't supposed to be a hate blog at all I'm just curious where other's stand and would love to hear some opinions on this topic!
