Survivor Lookback #2: Richard Hatch a Hero????

Mar 23, 2011 by UndercoverMonk
imageRichard Hatch has gotten a lot of attention as not only the first sole survivor but also as the game's first villain. His name became synonymous with backstabbing and betrayal. For the first several seasons he was looked to as the guidebook to winning the game. In fact Hatch's legacy has done more to help shape survivor than any one person.

But does his legacy actually hold water. Its been a while since I watched Borneo but as I remember it he never did any truly villainous things. He never stole from the other tribe (Rupert); he never lied about family or home life (johnny fairplay); he never hid food or camp supplies (Russel, Sandra, and many other pissed off survivors); And he stayed loyal to his tribe (unlike Candice who would later be called a hero).

What did Richard Hatch do:
He caught fish
did fairly well at challenges
he stayed loyal to Tagi post-merge
he was upfront with everyone when he could be

That sounds more like a Hero to me. It is true that he was ready to take out his alliance member but Kelly was the actual villain turning on her alliance of four. Being strategic doesn't make you a villain in my eyes. Tom Westman was very strategic but still was viewed as a hero. Richard Hatch deserves the same treatment. He always seemed to me to be pretty upfront and honest about his game play. And when he was voted out of all-stars early he didn't become bitter. A bitter jury is the most annoying thing in survivor. You lost! You were outplayed, outwitted, and outlasted get over yourself. But Hatch was very professional during the All-Stars reunion show.

So would I have put Hatch on the Heroes tribe probably not he has embraced his legacy and clearly belongs on the Villains tribe. But I think he like Boston would have found himself playing the hero role and being sacrificed to the evil that was russel hantz.

What are your thoughts is Hatch too be looked up to or looked down upon. Is he a wolf in sheeps clothing or is it the other way around.

Very comprehensive view and I completely agree with you. :)

He was villain cuz he was cocky and overconfident and showoff. Hatch is in my top 5 survivors of all time. The thing about season 1 is that that was beginning of the game and ofcourse you can't expect someone like Russell to come and play. But his attitude was more villain-like then any1 in his season. And in all-stars also...talking trash about the others. I consider him as not Hero or Villain but Player. I hope he gets out of jail now and win The Celebrity apprentice. :P
