Survivor Lookback #3: I'm Gonna Make Him An Offer He Can't Refuse

Apr 4, 2011 by UndercoverMonk
imageSince I was on vacation last week and couldn't get a lookback out I decided to cover a big one this week. The infamous deal made by Lex and Rob Mariano in Survivor: All Stars. That's right folks the deal that changed Survivor forever. The moment that had every fan either cheering their brains out or smashing their television sets in frustration. Lex had a chance to take Boston Rob's love bunny Amber out of the game and chose to take out. Let's press the re-est button on this lookback.

Its season 8 of survivor. There are no such things as redemption island, exile island, or even immunity idols. There had always been 16 contestants and two tribes. But for the 8th season Mark Burnett and his team decided to bring back 18 previous contestants (the so called all-stars)into three tribes.

There were many twists and drama during this season. The greatest drama revolved around Lex as he backed stabbed everyone around him while proclaiming "its business" and Boston Rob falling in love with ally Amber. These two clashed violently when after a tribal shuffle Amber was separated from the rest of her tribe. Now she was at the mercy of Lex and Kathy. She was living on borrowed time until Rob told Lex that if he saved Amber he would protect Lex after the merge. This deal was whispered as they left an immunity challenge and for some reason Lex trusted him. he voted out his ally Jerri.

Fast forward to the merge. Amber rejoins Rob adn they tell him he will be safe but after Lex nearly wins the next immunity challenge Robs alliance pressures him into breaking the deal and Lex is voted out and becomes the first member of the jury.

When I first started watching survivor in HvV I hated Rob for his antics on the Amazing Race. However Survivor is whole other ball of wax. Its OK to be a scheming villanous jerk. Its expected. Its been part of the game since Richard Hatch first stepped onto a deserted beach and sat in a tree and dictated how the game would be played. So for Lex to complain at the reunion show about Rob not being honorable was complete hipocrasy. he stabbed allies and favorites Ethan and Colby in the back before he even made the Robfather deal.

So I have gradually become a dubious Rob fan. he deserves a win for what he's done for the show but I also think after the current season I will be done with Rob Mariano. I want to see a few of the other stars of Survivor shine.

So back to what tis look out is about the deal. The fall-out was the breaking of the final illusion that you could trust anyone in the game. I also think this deal led to the events of the horrible Vanaautu season with one guy trusting no one. It took a heroic move in Palau to wash clean the stench of betrayal that we felt after watching all stars. It seems we fans can't decide which is better a hero or a villian. We also cant seem to decide which category Rob belongs in. Thats the beauty of his play he changes it every time. He out-thought one of the greatest villians survivor ever created. Lex buddy nice try but you dont make a deal with The Robfather!!!

what did you guys think of Lex and his decision to keep Amber. Were you rooting for Lex or Rob. Who is the bigger villian? Leave your questions and comments! And let me say i can't wait to do a lookback on Phillip!!!!

to be fair to Lex he didn't really back stab Ethan or Colby he only really back stabbed Jerri. And the reason he was so upset was because they were good friends before the show and he broke their friendship.
